Help!

I need some help. The house I have in Meridian, MS came with a large stand of bananas. We've been here 4 years and love the look of the plants around the pool.

We had a severe winter this year, with one night going to 9 deg. F and an extended cold snap. The plants are usually out by this time of year, but this year, nothing, and the stalks appear to be rotting.

Is this a total loss or do I need to wait?

Can anyone ID the type of plants? They reached 15 ft. or more each year and spread rapidly.

Where can I find these to replace them and what should I expect to pay?

I guess it is Orinoco. They are easy to find online. Expect to pay $10-25. An online supplier close to your area is Stokes Tropicals-Specializes in Tropical Plants, Rare, Exotic Plants, Trees

Yeah, that's what I was thinking...they look like Orinoco. If they were still alive, they would probably be up now or very soon. You should be able to find some for pretty cheap here on the site from other members (try a classified ad), on Ebay or in your area at Home Depot or some other garden place. They are pretty generic, so should be fairly cheap.

Looks like my bananas. I'd remove the debris. You might find some suckers coming up.

You need to cut all the material that is left there so the corm can dry and during this clean up process I'll bet you find a sucker on its way up.. like the previous post. I wouldn't give up hope for another couple weeks if you don't find anything. Nice Pictures by the way. :^)

Surfdwn...hey, I lived in Starkville, MS about 14 yrs. ago, when my wife was in grad school. Anyhow, I would imagine that you will get some regeneration of your plants. If not, drop me a line. I usually have some 'Orinoco' to spare.
