Based on advice from people here and a neighbor who gave me some plants, I cut down my three outdoor banana plants after the first freeze and covered them in pine straw. I had planted these maybe 6 months before. They were about 4 feet tall when I cut them down, not sure what variety.
Today, since it seems freezing temperatures are over (I'm in Atlanta), I decided to uncover them. This is what I saw: https://imgur.com/gallery/q6MHv6G Kind of mushy, wet, black, not looking good. Are they dead, or is this typical for what they would look like after being cut down a back in December? Any way they could be saved? |

The remaining part of the pstem (green part) is what you are seeing. It did freeze. As long as the corm did not freeze you're good. Wait until you see new growth, which will be when the soil warms to about 60 degF.
