Question chart / table of banana cultivar characteristics?

Is there a chart or table which lists bananas by cultivar and also provides cultural information such as height, climate hardiness, disease hardiness, fruit type, size, quality ?

Thanks!

Ron, I previously found many things in the Wiki including the impressive list of cultivars, but I was wondering if this data has been organized into a chart or table for easier ... err ... digestion !

Richard, you need to hook up with Pitangadiego. He's in San Diego and can sell you some nice pups, and dispense some great info about growing them in your area. Just click on the members link and search through the P's to find his contact info. He also gives tours of his jungle!

Mitchel, yes Pitangadiego and I are members of the local CRFG and I often send him customers. Someday I will also be one! Klemmthamm provided the useful like to MGIS (thanks!). However, they have limited support for queries against their data; i.e., some combinations cannot be performed simultaneously. I've asked them for a complete electronic copy of their table(s). We'll see what happens.

In the meantime, if someone knows of a chart / table of cultivar attributes that would be great. I'd hate to have one of my students create something that already exists.

Thanks!

Nate, webebananas.com is a wonderful resource for banana cultivars maintained by Mr. Banana himself. But I am looking for structured data -- tabularized if you will. If it doesn't exist in that form, then certainly that site is a great place to start the creation process.

Nothing comprehensive exists that you are looking for. You can find lots of similar tables, lists and charts on some of the more commonly hobby-grown species and cultivars, and they have info for growers in North America and Europe for the relatively few varieties available. But most banana varieties are grown in the tropics so things like hardiness are not recorded. If your goal is to create something like this, then have at it.

So, for those of you who care about such things, what is the opinion about using XML as a base file format?

It is a widely used, or at least a fairly common, format for setting up large tables and such, and with the right touch can be aesthetically pleasing as well... I think you're on the right track!

Varieties I supposedly bought: Manzano, Cavendish, Blue Java, Sweetheart, and Gros Michel.
What it seems I actually have: Brazilian, Cavendish, Namwah, Dwarf Red, Gros Michel, Pisang Ceylon, Veinte Cohol and SH 3640, and American Goldfinger. FHIA 1, Paggi and FHIA 17... Always room for one more.
