![]() In the wiki at Bananas.org, Safet Velchi is listed as a synonym of Chini Champa along with Bale, Champa-kala, Elakki, Kisubi, and Sukari. The genetic type is given as AB.
Over the last week, I've come across analytic reports from 5 different agricultural research stations stating that Chini Champa is type AAB, with the solo synonym of Champa-kala. I've also found reports from 6 research stations that Safet Velchi is type AB with synonyms of Elakki Bale, Kisubi, and Sukari. Between the two sets of reports, the characterizations of Safet Velchi and Chini Champa also differ. More data would be good. Anyone care to throw in their two cents? Thanks!

![]() 'Chini Champa' should be AB, however, banana landrace names are not standardized in any way, so there could be more then one variety being called 'Chini Champa' in different regions. The best you can do is verify as many popular synonyms as possible, because no single name has any real correctness over another...if that makes sense

![]() Detangling the taxonomy of Hebes is also difficult, but with those species you know with certainty where the plant came from and most of them are still growing in the wild.
In the case of bananas, it is good to see that gene scans and other "bar-coding" techniques are being used to specify what individual they are working with.

![]() I have Chini Champa and have New Paven/Neypoovan. Both appear to be the same variety to me. AB does look correct and shows to be correct in the research I have done. Research shows Safet Velchi is also synonymous with the two.
I can also verify they are NOT AAB Mysore! Or in the Mysore group! The name for Mysore in India is Champa! Not Chini Champa! Another name for Mysore is poovan. Not neypoovan! Research I have done also backs up this information. Taste and fruit is way different as well. Both of mine are WAY different than AAB Mysore which are growing right beside them! Different look, different fruit, and different taste!
