Bananas in mulch basin
Hi all. In Art Ludwig's greywater book, he talks about funneling greywater through mulch basins. Essentially a depression dug in the ground with the excavated soil piled around the depression as a berm. The depression is filled with mulch and the grey water is deposited into it. He talked about planting bananas directly into the depression. I am in SE Florida (zone 10b). Does this seem advisable to you, or would it be better to plant the banana on the berm?
I was also thinking of extending this concept to the downspouts off my house - channeling the water into mulch basins and planting the bananas in the basin. Would this work as well, or could it cause root rot? |

Re: Bananas in mulch basin
Have seen bananas watered with grey water, but not standing in it. I would have gone the opposite direction, and planted the bananas in a raised bed or compost and then watered them with the grey water. Benefits of water but not chance for being over-watered.

Re: Bananas in mulch basin
grey water has too much soap in it. the soap would quickly coat the mulch and mulch basin to the point that it would not let water pass thru to the plant roots.
