banana insulation
Am looking to find some pipe insulation to protect my musa basjoos. I thought using the foam insulation sleeves,the only problem is finding the diameter wide enough to wrap the trucks in. Anyone know where I might find some,aprox.6-8 inches in diameter and 8 feet long? Thanks

If you are in zone 8 with musa basjoo, it should be pretty easy to insulate with cheap materials. You could simply use something such as a combination of bubble wrap covered by shrink wrap which should be enough insulation for your climate. Plastic tarps might work as well.
I'm 2 zones colder, and here's my set up which should work well since I've been overwintering them successfully for the last 2 years. Steve's garden: Overwintering the bananas and other plants for winter of 2012/2013 If you do anything similar to what I have, I think it would be overkill for your climate, but you can insulate with fall leaves if you are concerned.

what kind of lows dow you see in the winter steve? seems like a bit much to me but Im in 6B almost a zone 7 so I assume your winter gets a bit colder than mine

It varies quite a bit. It can get a few degrees below 0F down to -8F, but sometimes it hardly gets below 10F on the warmer winters. You can't really tell how cold it will get so it's best to prepare for the worst.
The record in recorded history is -22F, but getting down to that temperatures sounds very unlikely with the warming trend we have had in the past few decades.

Thanks Steve! I've been afraid to put my bananas in the ground because I didn't know how to get them through winter without digging them up. I am going to put a few plants in the ground next year and, try your technique for winter.
