Exclamation Hurricane Sandy

Hey banana buddies, I am new here but have enjoyed being a member!! You are all in my prayers. Stay safe during this tremendous storm!

Here in east central Ohio we are supposed to get rain and wind but nothing like the coast.

Take care of yourself, your pets and your bananas!!

Godspeed,
Carla

Hurricane and a blizzard that really bites
All my hurricane experience has been in hot weather.
Best of luck to all in Sandy's path.

Wow - for a cat 1 Sandy really packed a punch.
I hope you made it thru the blow in good shape. Losing a few nanas is minor considering the alternatives.

I want to share some comments from my experience with hurricanes Camile and Katrina.
Expect long lines, shortages, and inconvenience. protect your property. keep a positive attitude.
If you had flooding get ready for the battle of your life with your insurance company. They are NOT your friends. They will attempt to blame all damage on flooding - If you have flood insurance good for you- it will cover some of your loss. Start now documenting with pictures and witnesses if your home was damaged by wind or fire and then damaged/destroyed by surge or flood.
Ironically, the owners who lost their homes by fire instead of flood will probably be better off in the long run.
God bless you and good luck
Jose

Staten Island was hit the hardest of any place in New York. Houses were knocked off their foundations. There are boats on top of cars. They have found 19 bodies so far.
I was lucky. No trees down, or broken off. Some little branches (less than ½ inch) broken off hardwood and evergreen trees. Some minor shredding of some in-ground basjoos, but none broken. No potted bananas (there are about 75) toppled, or broken.

Glad you're okay, John. Is your home higher up and okay? Heart breaking story about the two young boys who were swept from their mother's arms. I can only imagine the misery for so many people. We lost our home in 1972 due to a flood and had a great financial loss but no lives were lost.

John - glad you faired well - you must be living right
Yep , places with words like island or point in their names generally suffer most when a hurricane comes to town. The power of tons of water is incredible.
I saw a lady fromn Staten Island on TV this morning - she was miserable complaining about no food, water or clean clothes after 3 days - It takes FEMA awhile to get geared up even on their best days and they don't deliver
Hopefully, you guys have church/religious groups in town by now with hot food and essentials - they were 1st on the scene and much appreciated. FEMA could learn a few lessons from those folks.
Good luck to those in Sandy's path.

Yes Harv, we're a little higher up than most of the surrounding area. I would guess an elevation of about 100 feet. The house is OK. There really wasn't that much rain in the storm, just wind. Mostof the damage was in low lying coastal areas, where the elevation is just a few feet above sea level. The flooding wasn't from rain, but rather a tidal surge - sea water. The only thing I experienced was a popwer outage for between 30 and 40 hours.
