The Banana Flower

In cleaning up the mess from the winds I picked up the top of a cut pseudo stem pictured above and found something growing backwards out of the cut. I lifted it up and out came the flower bud, so I decided to have a closer look at it.

It was about a foot long before I started to take it apart.

You can see the leaves and the flower in the middle. If you look real close you can see the little nanners in there.

So I peeled off the leaves until I got to the fruit. Tiny little things! The match is the cardboard book type, not a stick match.

I then peeled some bracts off until it wouldn't peel anymore.

Then I cut it in half and this is what it looked like.

Another shot in the sunshine. Now you know!

Thanks for the pictures- interesting. Your Orinoco's look like they were doing well until the winds came. I think you should give the Orinoco's another chance and keep growing them

I don't grow Orinoco anymore. I replaced them with FHIA 18

I actually thought about eating a bit raw but decided not to. The texture was very nice, like a cellery heart. It actually smelled pleasant too. But I really wanted to see what was inside more than I wanted to cook it! I won't have many chances to cut one open you know. (knock on wood!)

Very interesting. I know it's a terrible loss, but consider your pictures a step forward for science.

Very cool! Thanks for the dissection pics! (I love a good dissection, myself!) Very interesting to see how it looks under-developed....though much like I would have expected it to. Too bad it didn't make it to maturity!
