Anything I can do to protect bananas in a hurricane?

None of mine are planted in a very safe spot, no fence or wind blocking unfortunately. My area is in the path of the hurricane. I’ve heard of people cutting off all the leaves on their plants to cause less drag. I was thinking about putting sand bags down to keep them from being uprooted. Anyone have suggestions?

Depending how tall they are, I'd try wrapping the leaves, and staking it if possible.
Other members will have better ideas I'm sure.

I have several stakes Ill tie them to today, I might use the one my tomato plant is staked too also since it’s been too hot to fruit anyways. Most of my bananas are 8 feet and under, either immature or dwarf cavendish. One of them is like 12 feet tall though and the most mature.

Cut the leaves of, it will make less surface for a wind to beat it. It will regrow in a few weeks

I suggest not cutting the leaves off but folding and tying them down with a cord of some type. Kinda like an umbrella. Should reduce drag but you will still have the leaves available after the storm to power the growth of your trees until new leaves emerge. I haven't actually done this.

I might try that honestly just with a bungee cord depending on the storm tracking

During our last tropical storm, i staked mine on 3 sides (think teepee) and put a cardboard ring around the trunk where the stakes were lashed together. I used bamboo since i have a large stand of it in my yard, but PVC would be a cheap alternative as well.

My prior experience with bananas in hurricanes is that if they don't have fruit on them they are fine except the leaves are totally shredded and they make you want to cut them off after the storm.

Turns out my area barely got any wind or rain after isaisis moved north East. I staked then with a 6 ft banana stake and I’ll probably leave them staked until hurricane season is over.

Shredded leaves are always better than no leaves unless the midrib is bent / crimped. I had a dwarf red years ago that had leaves like cardboard; other nanners would get shredded in a high wind, but this would hardly have any damage - just a split here and there. Man, I wish I had that plant again.

Blew the disc in my back between L4 & L5, and had to become a lightweight for a while. Gave up my main banana growing plot, and now just have a few in the yard - Dwarf Apple, Gros Michel 'Highgate', and Blue Java.
