just wanting to know if anybody has tried pupping ensete ventricosum,not maurelli has i have already done so with the maurelli,if anybody has?can they give me some advice first,because i dont want to damage the one i have without succeedingthanks best wishes jazz

I've had success with waiting until the ventricosum blooms for a while and then topping the plant at about 2' off the ground. It freaks out and throws pups about 80% of the time.

hi lorax,but in the uk i dont think i can get the plant to flower,how old was the plant when it was in bloom?

5 years or 50 feet here from seedling to blooms, usually, but if we have particularly hot weather in the dry season it can bloom as early as 3 years or 15 feet. Jazz, I'm in Ecuador and I don't have winter, I have no idea if you'd ever get the flower. You can try topping one of yours at the beginning of the growing season to see if it freaks out.

Mine average 3-5 pups per.

Jasmine, I know E. Maurelii , and E Montbelliardii pups when the growth point is destroyed, but with E.Ventricosum seed is so available and readily germinates, why do you want to risk cutting one down to get pups.

I thought I had a ventricosum pup once but it turned out to be a second seed germinated a year after the first

hi bigleafist do you honestly think i want to chop up a banana plant,i could be sent down for lifeno to be honest with you,im trying so hard to germinate banana seeds but with no luck,doing everything right,but still no sign of a seedling as yet, i just have to sit and wait,they say those who wait will recieve whats coming to them ha ha ha

There was a thread about forcing to make the Maurelli lots of pups, by lots I mean dozens at one time. You cut the plant very low and then divide the cut circle and make 2 small triangles touching with their tips.
It's somewhere in the forum, with complete manual. This way, you can get dozens of pups. Good luck.

hi jack yes i have seen the the thread,i am experimenting with that method at the mobut i wanted to know about the green ensete ventricosum?the maurelli, i have produced some pups by chopping a mature plant in half and i had pups shooting,but not enough im greedy,i want moreso the other method was to damage the centre of the plant which like i said am going through that process just waiting now for any sign of life,jack will let you know the outcome

Are you sure Montbelardii also produces pups when chopped down? I heared it does not, and that Maurelli is actually the only one,...

I don't see the point of chopping a venticosum to get lots of pups. These plants get massive so you will struggle finding anywhere to over winter it if it gets too big. You will only get a couple of years max out of one plant then it gets too big.

You need to have patience as far as musa seeds go, those velutina seeds should sprout soon enough then you'll be extremely happy. They produce pups quite early in their life cycle and they may even fruit if you can keep them growing throughout the winter. I'm hoping to get mine to fruit.

Have you ever seen E. Montbelliardii seed? if not, same a Maurelii must be pups or TC

I think indeed Moty must be TC only then, never seen one flower, and from what I understand a flowering Maurelli produces 90% green ventricosum after sowing,...and so would monty I guess,...
But never seen a monty flower yet though...

I have tried several times to do a plain Ventricosum and a Montbelliardii ( once)without any joy.

I even sent a Monty to be TCd but that never took either. I only have two Montys left now and they are hard to find with none being TCd at the moment. So I wont be in a hurry to try another one.

Ensetes are pretty easy from seed ( if fresh) and I find they germinate quicker than Musa.

Agree, but after that they dies much more offen. Specially in even a bit lower humidity.
