Is this It?
Yes I'm still new at this (that being three yrs in a not so perfect climate) but, is this the flag as I've seen posted several times before or am I just hoping for something others may achieve easily in other areas. If it is the flag how long till flowering, fruit and becoming edible. ( Hey wait not even sure what type of banana I have here. Any help with that also?)

Yep! Congrats! Depending on the cultivar, it could take 3 to 6 months or longer for the fruit to ripen. If it is still green come first frost, cut the whole bunch down and hang it up inside the house. They will usually ripen the rest of the way like that.

Yep, if you see a real short leaf starting to open, that's a pretty good indication. Flower bud will follow very quickly after this little short paddle looking leaf opens.

Thanks to all for the info. I've seen a lot of pics of flag leaves on this site. Just wanted to make sure. I've had many people tell me that this is impossible around here. Yep sometimes before the tiny flag emerges, you'll get a leaf thats about half the size of prior leaves. It's actually pretty easy to miss.
When you just notice a flag leaf on a plant, as you celebrate, look at the leaf before it. There's a good chance that it was smaller than the one still before that one, that you may have not noticed as it happened. It's easy to miss.  Anyway, congrats once again! Keep us posted!

Jarred, after reading your post I decided (OK I would have anyway) to take a look at my nana and see if the last leaf was shorter than the previous. I seen something coming out and had to get a ladder to see well enough. I believe another leaf is on it's way? Never seen a flower emerge so not sure what to expect with only an inch of green coming out.
Is it possible that I didn't miss the first sign and the flag is now on its way? Maybe winter dormancy makes the first sign a little more pronounced? No horticulture classes in my past just someone who started with a few plants and decided to go crazy and plant bananas! Thanks, Bob |

Jarred, I just finished looking through some recently added photos and noticed that there is some green at the beginning of emerging flowers. If only I would do a little research before asking dumb questions! Just excited and always pessimistic.
Anyway the tip is through and I will post more pics when it flowers. I really want to know what type of banana this is, it is the only unknown banana I have! |

Jane I overwintered it using the same method as Bigdog explains in a post somewhere on this site. The banana was given to me as a pup 3yrs ago at the end of the year so I had it that first winter and this is my second year planting it outside.
The flower on it is still on its way out maybe halfway right now. Seems like FOREVER!!!!! |

Hello mudcat25,
The species of banana that can overwinter outside in zone 6 is very limited. Usually it is basjoo, sikkimensis and/or Helen's hybrid. Taking a look at the bloom picture of your plant, the color of the bud is dark red which means it is not basjoo, but sikkimensis or Helen's hybrid as the color of the bud of basjoo is dark yellow. Distinction between sikkimensis and Helen's hybrid is very much difficult as the two resemble in many aspects. Helen's hybrid is a hybrid beween Sikkimensis and Chini-Champa. |
