I just finished taking these pictures of most of my bananas that are out in the ground. I still have a few that are potted up and were not included. I wanted to start a thread so show the growth rates of my nanners over the course of the summer. There are several of these "babies" that are from you folks and for that I REALLY appreciate it.
Some of the bananas do not look that impressive right now, but before long, they should all take off... Hope you enjoy!!!! Slideshow of Begining of Banana Eruption 2008 - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting |

My Illustris did indeed come back and with a vengence. They spread pretty well, but are easily removed. I have already dug quite a few for friend of mine that just put in a new bed at his new house. As far as what was left overwinter in the ground, was, basjoo, Saba, ornata pink, velutina, lasiocarpus, and I guess that is it. Most of the rest were sent to me by alot of GREAT members over the past summer and overwintered either in my unheated garage, or in my den. I will be testing some of them this winter, as long as I get a pup off it to keep warm... Hope this answers your question, if not, feel free to pm or email me and I will tell you what little I do know, which shouldn't take me too long...LOL |

I figured you were popping right and left. BTW, the rostrata is sending out a pup, the Pedro is shooting out a new leaf, but the Scheff is still just sitting there. I do have it in the ground and the others in pots, so the soil is probably a bit warmer in the pots... BTW, thanks for the compliments... Looks like the Tigers are ruling ALMOST everything!!!! |

Glad to hear about the heliconia. If the Scheideana doens't grow, I've got plenty more. A pseudostem in my second mat of California Gold has flowered. The first one choked and I had to cut it down. I swear, I walked out one day I saw a big leaf, and then two days later and a bloom hanging down. Remarkable.

Good looking so far!! That's going to be lush by the fall.
I can't wait to see the yard soon too. Maybe mine will start to grow soon when the temps in Indiana stay above 50 degrees for a day.....Brrrrrrr!!!!! ![]()

Jay, Thanks for the compliment and I, too, am looking forward to meeting with you in a few weeks. Just wish it would be later in the summer so my yard would have more growth on it...

Wow Randy that looks great!
I love the layout! You've done a great job with the prep. Some times I wish I'd spread my beds out more. Guess I'll just grin in August knowing I don't have to drag my hose as far as you! LOL!

Anyway, I got it last spring in a 5 gallon container and it did real well. When temps started to drop last fall, I took it around the house and stored it by a tall, narrow window in my unheated garage, along side my queen palm. I lost a couple of leaves through the winter, but not many. I did not monitor the temps in my garage over the winter too closely, but I know it went to the upper 30s on a couple of occasions. I did not water it at all until this spring and only maybe twice until I brought it out this spring. I have fertilized it and since the temps are finally getting up, I have started back watering it about every third day for now. When temps stay constant in the 90s, I will probably water a little more often. Really, I do not know why it has done so well for me, but I am glad it has. BTW, thanks for the compliment on the slideshow. Not much on the 'puter stuff, but saw it and thought I would give it a try.... |
