Winter setback!

Unfortunately the temps got down below freezing in my little greenhouse. We experienced a low of 14F. I covered whatever was left with sheets. Hopefully this will help.

Dean that is so dis-heartening!

They will be OK I think. You should see mine - I left most outside this year. Bad year to pick to do that! I am just waiting to see what will come up and what won't. I am afraid most won't. The ones I did have covered, (those were in an A-frame I had put together) and those 70 mile per hour winds we had the other day blew it apart. I will have to start over again this spring - so save a pup or two for me!

I have been hearing a lot about the weather both of you have been having lately. I hope your plants (and both of you!) make it through ok! I'm sure you all will. And think of it this way, if they do, it just makes them all that much hardier. Those winds you just had just came through here as a blizzard and buried all my plants under 14 to 16 inches of snow. Just south of me got 23.5 inches of snow. Spring is jusrt around the corner!

Thanks JaNan! Sorry to hear about yours. I'll have a pup for you eventually. I still owe you for that Viente Cohl you got me. Yes, that was some terrible weather we have had. Something we Texans aren't used to. I got my fingers crossed for you.

Eric, thanks I bet you all are really catching the brunt of it. Were expecting a little snow tonight or tomorrow, but nothing like what you guys are getting. We'll make it out with the bananas, but I don't think they'll fruit. Hope your plants are okay.

Thanks Dean. I think they are ok. Yeah we really got hammered big time. The one good thing about the snow is that next week we will most likely see the coldest temperatures all winter here. So the FEET of snow will help insulate them. Although at this point I have no idea what to expect come spring.

My basjoo has indured pretty harsh temps here and recovered really well, as have some others. So I'm thinking yours will be ok. Good luck and let us know what happens. But I know, it is hard to look at them now

Update:

Well, it's about to get down in the 20's(F) again. This time I took some precautions to hopefully save some electric and plant growth. I caulked and taped out air leaks. Applied bubble wrap for insulation on shutter. Put in a black barrel full of water for passive solar heating. Hopefully it will soak up heat during the day and release during cold nights. Covered remaining plants with sheets and put in a light for heat [couldn't find another heater-sold out].

Grow light for additional warmth and hopefully happy little plants...

This one is starting to regrow...

I feel bad for you and your plants Dean. Considering the temperatures you experienced there, you came out very well. Your preparations saved many of them even if they were damaged. Good Job!! They will come back if you don't give up on them.

ahh :O so sorry to hear bout' this ! best of luck with the rest of winter, im headed to Cuba on sat, hope the house doesnt get too cool lol. I think my dads turning it down to like 67 or somethin. oh well they will just slow down a bit , spring in just around the corner , hang on everyone !

West coast is under attack from the arctic. Couple nights ago was near record @ 32F. More records on the way........

The northeast has been getting crushed with below average temperatures since December, and it doesn't look like there's any end to it. I've put leaf bags around both my basjoos and insulated them well, but I think they are set back pretty badly, but hopefully make it through the winter.

All of the exposed bamboos look fried too as it got to -9F with many subzero nights. It really doesn't look like there's an end to this. I think that map is pretty deceiving as it should be dark blue over NY as it should drop into the single digits tonight.

Last night hit 32 again! Frost as well. Also, we're now 12 days past our annual last day of frost there is no end in sight

Dean don't feel too bad, this winter I had a mouse get into the grow room without me knowing and once the signs show up it was too late. That mouse had chewed up many of my corms and burrowed into the soil and made a mess. I was pissed and frustrated because I couldnt catch it ( or maybe them). We'll know the toll soon.
