Okay, Lynn, you've got me eating my words. As my sig. says, I am here to learn. So what is that miracle stuff you wrapped your PSs in? and how many layers did it take? Thanks, Olaf

Re: Winter Protection Zone 6 - Fingers Crossed
Hi
I went to Home Depot and bought boiler insulation (plastic backing which is the white stuff in pic) and rope. Initially I wrapped it with the boiler insulation (around 2 time) and tied it. I later felt that was not going to be enough so I went back and bought some batt insulation and more boiler insulation. Then on top of my initial wrap I put the batts insulation then another layer of boiler insulation. I then used the plastic wrapping tape and went all around it including the top to secure it in addition to the rope. The ground covering was about 6" of leaves I made into mulch then another 6" of hay on top of that. The last year pic was my initial wrap before I decided to add more insulation. Thanks Will post another pic in about a week of the progression. |

Re: Winter Protection Zone 6 - Fingers Crossed
I forgot I also added a layer of a frost blanket I ordered from a greenhouse supply company that was used as my last wrap.

Re: Winter Protection Zone 6 - Fingers Crossed
Hi Lynn,
when I looked at your picture last fall, it did not look anything like that much insulation. The thin "spikes", after you were done, looked like you just had wrapped some frost cloth or such around the PS. That should teach me to get the facts, before I mouth off. I have saved your method for future reference. Thank you, Olaf

Re: Winter Protection Zone 6 - Fingers Crossed
Wow amazing job! You would never know we just had one of the worst winters in years. How much stem does it have now after winter? That will be an absolute monster come fall

Re: Winter Protection Zone 6 - Fingers Crossed
So there was no heat used at all in this method?

Re: Winter Protection Zone 6 - Fingers Crossed
As far as I gather, there was none used. I don't see, how she could have gotten any heat into that wrap, but Lynn would be the final authority on that. The secret is, that she used fiberglass batting in the wrap. I do not know if compressing it reduced the R-value, since it restricted the air space within the fibers. But you cannot argue with the success she had. Best, Olaf To Lynn: We were discussing your wrapping method here: Are my Basjoos dead?

Re: Winter Protection Zone 6 - Fingers Crossed
Hi,
I used no heat just the wrapping from Home Depot. I made sure it was wrapped and mulched really well. I will post another pic next week. |

Re: Winter Protection Zone 6 - Fingers Crossed
That is great, I am so happy it worked out for you. All of mine are wind blown and sun burned from their trip to the out doors a couple weeks ago. I may try your method this fall. Thank you.
