Recent cold weather - any impacts for Musa Basjoo?
We are experiencing slight cold weather (Toronto, Ontario) recently with night temperatures dipping below 50 F (~5 to 7 C) and day temperatures not increasing above 75 F. How much will this affect Musa Basjoo since I read somewhere that it will be stop growing at or below 5 C.
What care we have to take to sustain its growth? I'm still feeding water every two days and throwing fertilizer (30-10-10 - inorganic) every week. Mine is only 1 feet and I planted it couple of weeks inground. With current weather like this and relatively short summer in southern ontario, I fancy my chances of Musa reaching 5 feet or more this year. any suggestions, especially from people growing musa in colder regions. thanks, |

Re: Recent cold weather - any impacts for Musa Basjoo?
Welcome swatikrish, I wouldn't worry about the temperatures hurting your basjoo till fall when it starts getting cold. I would be careful not to over water until it warms up a bit though so the roots don't get waterlogged and rot.
My guess is that you should shoot for about 4' the first year since your plant is small. If you can protect the corm after that ( I had trouble last winter), the sky's the limit. |

As Bob said, I don't think you have to worry about the weather hurting your basjoos. It just makes things move more slowly. I was about to launch a new thread, "Lousy cold weather...2"Lousy cold weather slowing things down.

Re: Recent cold weather - any impacts for Musa Basjoo?
I'm over in Guelph about 45-60 min away form T.O. and have had my basjoo in ground for over a month now. It is actively growing the past couple of weeks. Just keep the watering down and it will be just fine

Re: Recent cold weather - any impacts for Musa Basjoo?
I dug up my MB for the first time last fall because it was in a cramped location. I kept it in the garage and it seemed to make it through the winter ok with about 5 feet of good stem with the corm. I replanted it in a slightly less sunny location at the end of April and it hasn't produced any leaves yet.
I know by this time last year (left in ground over winter) it had leaves. How much of a delay can I expect while it develops new roots? I'm thinking I need to move it to a sunnier location. Thanks, Dave |
