I found these at the local Publix in Orlando and a coworker says he bought them in Tampa as well. The sign in the store says "Manzano Banana" and the sicker brand is Turbana from Columbia and it says Manzano as well. The picture isn't so great since I am traveling and had to use my phone.
Kind of nice seeing a little variety come through the stores.

LOL...think the salt was a size comparison. And for the record, a lot of people put salt on watermelon (I'm not one of them, though). Salt on a banana sounds pretty nasty, though. Then again, it sounds nasty on watermelon, but I've heard it doesn't taste salty, but rather, augments the flavor somehow.

Anywho, nice to see other varieties available in stores. If only they had the diversity the apple market has!

Yes the salt was the easiest item to use for a size comparison. I haven't noticed these at the store before but then again my banana addiction is still fairly new.

The flavor is interesting and a little bit bitter and chalky. It seems to dry out my mouth as soon as I bite into one. Maybe they were picked to soon or it's an aquired taste. I think my lack of exposure to different banana varieties and years of store bought williams hybrid and gran nains had me expecting something different.

I just ate one a collegue brought in for lunch and it was the best bananas I have ever had! It was also a Manzano so I think the ones I bought were over ripe.

I just bought some from Winn Dixie yesterday. They have had them there for months that I know of, usually a quick mover and you have to catch them before everyone gets off work. I went in one day and there were Hawaiianos, the next day they were all gone.

The local Asian markets have been carrying manzanos for about a year now here. Some of the more upscale supermakets have had some smallish red but unidentified bananas on and off this winter as well. I always pick any of these up when I see them. Might as well show some support.... who knows what we may be seeing in the future if these start to take off.

I get the manzano's at the local asian market here, when they are too ripe they are very chalky and dry out your mouth..

But let them get ripe first when they start to get dark spots and they are delicious!

youll know when they are ready when you try to take one off the hand and it just falls right off easily

Manzanos when they are unripe are astringent and dry out your mouth in a nasty way. As Mullenium says - they are ready to eat when they fall off the bunch - not before. The only ones you can eat when not fully ripe are the Cavendish!

Wow, I feel guilty knowing that I have Manzanos available in all of the grocery stores in my area. It's been that way since I was a child and they have always been my favorite grocery store banana. The irony is.. I can't grow them! They do better north of here.

Indeed, Manzanos are terribly astringent when not fully ripe. Don't bother peeling them until you see some black on them. The skin should come off pretty much by itself.

An AWESOME alternative to Manzano is the "Mysore" banana. It tastes almost exactly the same and does not have the astringent quality to it.

Found some manzano here at the harris teeter thefirst three I tried almost made me loose it,It was like biting one of those small crab appples.After three or four days in a bag they were ok. last night they had a new ones and these are much nicer they are still green I am hoping these willl be good ones.

I did not know you could eat watermelon without salt.

If you eat them too early, manzanos will be very astringent. In other words, they will taste terrible. DO NOT consume them when they are yellow. You need to wait until they start to get some black spots. You'll know they are ready when the peel starts to crack. The stem should look wrinkly to the point that the banana will peel itself if you hold it upside down by the stem. If you eat them at that point, I'm sure you will agree that they are some of the best tasting nanners out there.

If they are still green, you are about one week away.

Here are some photos of some recently purchased manzanos. I bought these about 3 days ago and they are still not ready. Notice one has a crack, but the skin is still too thick and yellow. So, cracking is not the most important indicator.. peel "texture" is.

The banana on the far left is the closest to being ready. Notice the black on the stem at the point where the stem meets the banana. Once that wrinkles down a bit(a day or two), it is ready.

I bought some yesterday and made the mistake of thinking they were ripe because they were yellow...........big mistake.....that was one of the worst things i have ever tasted lmao Now they are sitting on the counter till they get officially ripe.
