Update: After spending over an hour reading FAQ stickies and screwing around, the damned thing will still not @;&!ing display an embedded photo. I am not computer illiterate in the slightest. This has been so frustrating I'm done trying at this point. Please follow the URL to view the only photos in my gallery, as they are all of this "mystery" plantain.

A woman sells me these gigantic plantains, but is fiercely secretive about what the variety is and has proven immune to all my attempts to bribe her for the info.

They're quite angular, nice and dense, good flavor ( only ever cooked green - I'm not interested in ripe) and the interior green one's flesh is typical in color (no red or orange tinges).

Please help me figure out what these are. The are SO good and I want to start growing my own, but I have no idea what variety they are of!

We can’t really identifiy precisely without seeing more of the plant, but in Hawaii there are really only a few Plantain cultivars present, ‘Dwarf Puerto Rican’ (a dwarf false-horn type), a tall false-horn type akin to something like ‘Maricongo’ or ‘Dominico Harton’, and ‘African Rhino Horn’. There is also a French-type occasionally but much more rare. Judging by the fruit I would guess it is one of the first two, one of the false-horn types. The tall one is sometimes called ‘Buffalo Horn’ in Hawaii, but it is not really a commonly used name outside of Hawaii and isn’t really helpful to find specific information.

It’s possible it could be another differnt Plantain cultivar as well, but if the owner isn’t willing to share I guess we may never know.

What island are you on? They aren’t likely to be anything special, and you’d very likely be pleased with any true Plantain cultivar. They are possible to get plants of, but actually somewhat difficult to grow as they are very susceptible to most of the common pests and diseases we have.
