Howdy,

I'm new, as you can tell from the subject, and would like to maybe get into bananas again.

I had bought a house in South Austin that had a few banana trees and the fruited once, but then severe drought followed up by a freezing winter killed them. I would like to plant some more, but don't really know how or when to go about it. Is it too late in the year to plant? Should I start them indoors later in the year? Dwarf plants kept inside? Thoughts?

Oh yeah, I don't have a green thumb. I was successful with lettuce only because I gave them the right amount of neglect. LOL

welcome. still planting myself. will be all summer. depending on the plant dwarf or otherwise will determine what you need to do with it, indoors/outdoors. just have to research what you want. the wiki might help.

namwa, raja puri, will be good for you among others.

In my area June pups will fruit in the following year if I can successfully get them through the winter with protection or the winter is mild. Don't put it off since you will just lose time which cannot be replaced. Go for it now!

I suggest the following types for your area: Dwarf Orinoco, Dwarf Namwa, Raja Puri, and Dwarf Brazilian. These are cold tolerant and fairly easy to manage from a height standpoint. I have the tall namwa which looks awesome and makes big bunches but it is difficult to deal with during the winter. Just got the dwarf namwa but wish I had it originally.

I graduated from UT. Lived off of 22nd Street for a couple years and a condo at the end of Lavaca near MLK. Good times!

We used to office on 17th Street a block from the Dog and Duck. Loved it down there. I used to take my dog to work and walk her all around the hood.

I'll try and find some dwarfs and get to planting. Are the ones you mentioned fruit bearing?

Yeah, all four are fruit bearing.
