Newbie Atl GA seeking knowledge & plants

Hi, I’m looking to use bananas for shade and privacy in back yard. I would like taller plants (10 -18ft?) that are easy keepers, fast growers, and if possible edible or at least useful (like using banana leaves for tamales, and other cooking purposes). Also can’t be harmful to dogs. Any ideas?

I’m really new to Musa growing, and really look forward to my first attempts. I regularly grow other edibles, including a 15 yr old potted key lime tree.

I’m an amateur chef and big time foodie, do my own canning, jams etc so if anyone wants to talk about cooking bananas info or recipes I’d love that!

We have lots of yard space, and if anybody in the area wanted to do some experiments I’d be up for that too!

The area I am looking to fill is between a concrete pool apron and a 6ft wood privacy fence.

Cost is also a huge concern.

I just had a gentleman from the Atlanta area visiting today here in San Diego and he took home two banana plants. He chose a Pisang Ceylon and a Namwah because your winters can get quite cold and both varieties are more cold tolerant than other varieties.
Locally I sell a lot of Namwah plants especially to Asian customers who use pretty much every part of the plant for cooking. The center of the pseudostem is used for stir fries, the leaves are used for wrapping meat tamales style, the inflorescence (have not tried it myself but have been told the Namwah inflorescence is superior over other inflorescences like Brazilian)is used for soups and salads and of course the banana fruits are super delicious as well.

Welcome to the Jungle!!!!

Another plant which is an ornamental is Musa Basjoo.
It is almost hassle free and makes a good green barrier.
This plant you may leave inground year round and then in the fall you will need to put a heavy layer of mulch down for winter protection.
You will need to plant it in well drained rich soil.
Big box stores in your area might carry it in the garden center too.

An internet search will reveal the possibilities of this plant for you .
