I work in a plant nursery and someone told me that we sold banana plants, so I had to get one. The variety that I have is Musa Truly Tiny. I know that the lineage is complicated for this variety, which I think is interesting. I'm not sure if my plant resembles the cavendish variety characteristics or the brazilian characteristics. Needless to say, I want to learn more about the variety and other banana varieties as well. I live in zone 5 in the US, so this dwarf variety is perfect since it will be staying inside.

Welcome to the Bunch. ... Use the forum wiki at the top to lookup info about different Banana varieties. .... DO NOT over water your new plant. Root rot is easy to get and very hard to cure. Also review the info for fertilizing nanas and potted nanas.

It got repotted the second it came home since it was circling the bottom of the pot when I took it out. I have been watering once or twice a day though. We've had 70-80 degree weather and it's in really hot sun. We had a lot of wind that week and it had no trauma, even though my fruit trees 20 feet away have bent branches now. I haven't seen an issue with it yet though. It takes about a week or so per new leaf, and it probably needs to be fertilized, but I'm excited to see it grow!

Bananas grow best in low to mid 80's temps. The temps you want to watch out for are below 60 deg (stops growing) & above 90 deg (stops growing & sunburns). ... Watering a potted banana once a day is too much unless the soil is super draining. ... However, misting the leaves a couple of times a day is good. Let the soil get nearly dry before watering. the roots need to breathe. ... Fertilizer, a tablespoon of every 2 or 3 months ( depends on type) or use liquid ( miracle grow) per directions for potted plants.

OH ... the hot sun! ... Young banana plants need some filtered shading from the sun during the heat of the day. Most potted plants have been kept inside and will need to be slowly acclimated to the outside direct sunlight or they will sunburn. Mature and young nana plants benefit from filtered sunlight when temps are in the 90's F.

Your Truly tiny, I suggest morning sunlight and afternoon filtered shading. ... My potted Truly Tiny (s) are sitting under bigger banana plants (8 ft) for shading and doing great.

It has grown up in a greenhouse for most of its life, so its used to the heat and the sun. I tend to water once a day since the soil dries out quickly (it probably has to do with the roots or the recent hot weather). I haven't seen burning yet. It looks to be thriving, but I will pay attention to that now, so thanks!
