![]() I have been here for a couple of months and figured it was time for a formal introduction. My name is obviously Justin. I’m originally from Detroit. I now live roughly 45 minutes west on the border of Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor. One thing I’ve found strange about this place is that people here seem to like each other. I spend most of my time at a local sports message board. We pretty much all hate each other. Now that football season is upon us, it’s gotten worse. You either roll with Michigan or Michigan State. Over there it’s pick a team or GTFO. As you can tell from my avatar, I am a University of Michigan guy.
I used to visit this site every once in a while. I mostly lurked and read posts without actually signing up. Coincidentally I saw Martin post on another forum that he would have Ae Ae pups at some point. I can’t remember for sure but I think I found his listing on this site through an internet search and I recognized the username as the one I’d seen previously on the other forum. I figured what the heck, signed up and started posting. My first banana was the stereotypical DC from a mail order company. I should start a “post here if your first banana was a DC water pup from Spring Hill/Henry Fields/Gurneys/insert mail order company here” thread. I know I’m not the only one. A funny thing happened to that plant. My wife was complaining about the gnats from all of my plants that were moved indoors for the winter. She made me put all of my gnat infested plants in the garage. Nothing I used would kill those damn gnats so they stayed in there all winter. The cold didn’t bother my dwarf navel orange at all but the DC eventually died back. Of course when it died back, my wife takes the pot out of the garage and puts it in the yard in sub freezing temperatures. By the time I realized what happened, it was too late. My next plant was an ice cream that I found at a local nursery. That was the first time I had ever seen those in this area. They had three or four 12” plants for about $14. I grabbed the tag, went home and researched the plants before I bought. I went back and the plants were gone. You have got to be freaking kidding me. Luckily they had two plants with roughly a 24” P stem for about $25. Of course I bought that one and still have that to this day. I went back the next week and the other one was gone. I was lucky I bought when I did. I’m not trying to break a record here. This introduction went a lot longer than originally planned. |

![]() Welcome to the site! Thanks for the great background story...yes, it's pretty peaceful around here and that's the way we do our best to keep it. Anger kinda dampens the learning environment we try to foster here. Hope you enjoy the site and learn a lot here!

![]() Welcome aboard Justin, glad to have you on the team. The members here have a different appreciation for life and how to coexist and all sorts of warm fuzzy things like that...
Anyway, we do have a lot of fun over the years here. We probably all have had some great memories and made lifelong friends along the way... Looking forward to reading your posts.

![]() Hey Justin ... Yeah, I think a lot of pplz here can relate to how your banana fascination started with a DC. For me, it started about 4 years ago. I was visiting my brother in TN, and at an old school gas station near his house, there was a kid sitting under an umbrella listening to his ipod with hundreds of little potted plants around him. I walked over to take a closer look and first recognized various types/colors of crepe myrtles as well as little 4 inch plants that looked like cannas. I had grown cannas for years and was looking for some new varieties. I also wanted to try growing crepe myrtles, ever since I saw several 6-8' bushes blooming their heads off in the heat of summer near my grandmother's house in her old school steel mill neighborhood. Of course I could never find a myrtle at any nursery here because as all the professional nursery and sales people know, and never missed the chance to tell me, crepe myrtles can not be grown here in Pgh. It seems that someone forgot to tell the babas that! Anyway drawn closer by the myrtles, I looked at the tags on the little "cannas" and saw that they were "tropical bananas." Of course Scooter could not provide any other information, except that every plant cost $1. I scooped up 3 "tropical bananas" and 3 crepe myrtles and later that week they found themselves here in tropical Pittsburgh, PA. Three years and dozens & dozens of pups later, I found myself here on bananas.org where some helpful members identified my first "tropical bananas" as most likely DC High-color minis! Of course I now have 5-6 other varieties too, ... and those delicate southern crepes? They die to the ground each year, but even after 3' of snow this February, presently stand over 7' tall with huge quadruple flower scapes on each stem!

![]() Welcome Justin
It's been some time since I've been on the page and noted your post and that your a Michigan fan. While I'm not a Michingan fan per se any day that Notre Dame loses is a good day in my book. Congrats on the win yesterday. I'm curious to see how Rich Rodrigues fares this year. He spent some time down in our neck of the woods at Tulane where he did very well. I know he has had a sluggish start at Michigan. LSU Tiger fan myself |
