Default Howdy Bananas!

Hi All,

I'm Dave of Paxton, FL and you can call me Zorro if ya like. I'm finally in a place where I can grow some tropicals here in FL (Born in Montgomery, AL and lived over half my life in Atlanta, GA) so I am trying my hand at bananas! I understand I am up for a challenge because I am in North FL, but I am looking forward to it.

Starting out, I have 3 starter plants that I purchased from Florida Hill Nursery. I am trying Ice Cream (Blue Java), Gran Nain, and FHIA-17. I have a small water feature and I am trying to add a little tropical height to it... My only question is now after reading so many different things, how far apart should I plant these in full sun? I'm anxious to read your responses since I am thinking of just going for it and if I have to do some digging later, so be it

6 to 8' foot apart will work.I have some as close as 3' and they grow fine. The further apart the better, just depends on how much room you have

Hi Zorro, I'm a newcommer also. I can't say how far apart they should be. I planted mine about a meter apart (3') and they went bananas (as the saying goes). One thing I've noticed is that when your bananas go bananas, there'll be suckers (pups?) all over the shop soon after and they'll get quite crowded quickly. Especially where you are which I believe is sub-tropical.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone. I decided to plant them 6' apart in a triangle (roughly) around my pond. Hopefully they don't get drowned by this crazy storm we are having right now. Figures it would be a frog strangler the very next day after I planted them! I'll update on how they weathered the storm.

Welcome from another North Floridian I'm new to nanners so I'll be facing this lovely challenge with you. Where exactly is Paxon? I'm just outside of Gainesville and I have seen some people with gorgeous bananas so I know it can be done, now to figure it out!

Paxton is in the middle of the Panhandle 45 mins North of Ft. Walton Beach. A local fellow and I were talking and he told me not to buy any more banana plants and to come dig them out of his yard. Now I too know it can be done I was pretty sure if they can grown them in Ohio, we can handle the challenge in sunny Florida!

Good luck! What varieties are you experimenting with in G'ville?

I'm not sure just yet LOL. As of now I have one regular old who knows what banana, but in a week and a half or so I will be going to a wonderful member I met on here's house and collecting some different varieties to plant around the yard. I'll be spending this weekend and next weekend getting prepared for them fun stuff! Once I get them I will let you know what varieties I do get and how they do for sure, do you know what kinds you will be getting from this guy? Sounds like we both got lucky meeting wonderful people who are willing to share with us!
