hi everyone
my name is bre. I am from the uk. not sure what to say really. a bit nervous I suppose, even though no-one can see me
I need help. I have been trying to germinate 4 different typea of banana seed but after 1 year, nothing. ensette ventricosum musa velutina musa balbisiana dwarf musa "truly tiny". These were purchased 2 months ago. suppose to germinate in 2 weeks. I have lost germination guide. I can germinate any kind of seed, pepper, veg, fruit as apple, orange, lemon, guava etc, no bother. Its the banana I have problems with. heated propagators are a bit expensive and my flat hasn't really got any really warm places. Can anyone please help?. Forgot to add, I germinate everything by the paper towel method. Last edited by bre : 08-15-2016 at 05:45 AM. Reason: forgot to add when first made post. |

Re: hi everyone
Hi Bre, and welcome aboard the Banana Express.
Nothing to be nervous about, this is a typed forum, LOL, but I'll give you some advice that I give to others who are about to speak on camera or the radio. Apply it here as you may: When giving a TV interview, speak to the person asking the questions like you were having a personal conversation. The camera is not alive so ignore it. It does not have millions of people hiding inside watching you. That will happen later, after you've gotten home and had a few drinks to calm down. On the radio, the same holds true. if you call in, you're simply having a phone call with a familiar voice. The only difference is that millions of people are listening in. If doing a studio interview, have the personal conversation like on TV, except there is no camera to record you; just a hot mic that millions of listeners are tuned into. When publicly speaking, ignore the bastards. They don't care what you have to say anyway. When typing on a forum such as this, don't worry about it. No more than 15-20 people are going to read it anyhow. I hope this has helped you get over your fear of public typing. Once again, welcome to the forums.

Re: hi everyone
Thanks Doug. I think I feel better.
I am not sure what's worse, feeling nervous typing on here, or knowing that I could have my nosey neighbour listening to me laughing to myself . Last edited by bre : 08-15-2016 at 10:03 AM. Reason: typo |

Re: hi everyone
Glad I could help.
You'll find that there is a nice balance of seriousness and humor on this forum. Now, while I was being lighthearted about that advice, it is exactly what I do myself, and coach others to do. It works. Just think of your posts as personal emails and leave it at that. The fact that millions of people will be reading them is irrelevant...

Re: hi everyone
Hi Bre, welcome to the org.
Germinating banana seeds can be frustrating. There are some threads on this topic. Main 2 things you need. Fresh seeds, and a lot of patience. Good luck!

Re: hi everyone
Oh I have the patience. I have been waiting for over a year. Just beginning to wonder if the seeds are viable or not. Might need to purchase some more, just in case.

Re: hi everyone
No heat from my f/f or the top of the boiler. Sometimes I put one or 2 seeds on top of my dvd player when I am watching a film. I am germinating about 10-12 different types of seeds with more than 1 in a pouch. My banana seeds that haven't germinated in a year, I have just planted them in a pot outside as we have some lovely weather atm. So, hopefully they will do better outside.

Re: hi everyone
I forgot to add. There are a few good Youtube how to videos which will demonstrate what you need to do since you might have lost the instructions.
And some really good ones on how to keep them alive in a similiar zone. Keyword search--- bananas from seed. |

Thank you.I forgot about you tube.
Something different. How do you delete pics?. I seem to have doubled mine by mistake. I can't seem to see anything that will suggest how to delete. |

Re: hi everyone
Open the photo. You'll see a whole bunch of HTML code and junk. All the way at the very bottom, there is a check box that says Delete Photo? Check it and hit the submit button next to it.
If they're in albums, it's a lot easier. just open the album and each one should have all kinds of options.

Re: hi everyone
You can PM me too. haha ... So why the interest in growing bananas from seed? ... It's my understanding that few if any banana seeds will germinate (1 in a 100 or so ???: from memory) and why it is easier to propagate the plants. Research labs have trouble germinating banana seeds. ... Also, from other post on the forum there appears to be some banana seeds for sell on ebay and else where from a Chinese source that are fake.
The difference between ornamental and eatable bananas is basically the seeds. The ornamental bananas have numerous large seeds making them undesirable to eat by most people. The eatable desert commercial type bananas is usually said to be seedless, but this is not really true. The seeds are so small the consumer doesn't notice them. Now you listed as having seeds from the 'Truly Tiny' banana. This is from the Cavendish type desert commercial banana the seeds should be very tiny ( I think). I would like to see a pic of those seeds. Anyway, may be next year my Truly Tiny will fruit and I can see for myself. There are others on the forum attempting to grow bananas from seeds and a few have germinated. Good Luck with your quest. Last edited by edwmax : 10-17-2016 at 02:29 PM. |
