My wife and i just moved into our first house with a yard, and i have finally been able to indulge in my fascination with gardening beyond just a few herb plants in a window box. We were both surprised when i decided i must have banana plants. Something about plants that produce pups and grow from a rhizome really facilitates me so i bought two bananas along with a dwarf avocado tree. The two bananas i was able to buy was a dwarf Cavendish and a Double Mahoi. Since we are only renting i have opted to put them in some 26" pots.

Sadly i don't have much hope for the Double Mahoi. I don't have a truck so my father in law had to pick up the plants for us, and when he got to our house the plants had fallen over, and we happened to be in the middle of a 110° heat wave. The leaves were heavily damaged and pretty crispy (on both plants). I cut off the damaged leaves, re potted it and watered them really well. The Cavendish which already had one pup that was about a foot tall instantly started looking much better and even started pushing up 4 more pups. The Mahoi on the other hand didn't seem to recover. It did start pushing out a new cigar leaf but then i notice all of the plant material around the top of the plant was dark brown very mush and spreading. I cut what i thought was all of the brown dead material off and it looked like it was doing better as the cigar leaf started growing again, but then the brown dead material came back, and the cigar leaf completely died amd now i have a 6" stump of a plant. I hope the crome will push up pups. While this was happening my Cavendish which was doing great stated slowing down in growth and the cigar leaf didn't open all the way and then it made a very small leaf. All these issues is what lead me to this site were i found some help on others threads for my Cavendish. I think it just needed fertilizer, so i have done that.

It sounds like your only hope is a healthy plant below ground that will rebound. I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya!

Where in SoCal are you? There may be others nearby to say hello. I used to live in Lemon Groove many moons ago.
