I've been reading this site for a few years, since 2008 I think, but this is my first post. Guess I'm a born lurker.
![]() It's kinda weird. I feel like I "know" many of you and, of course, you have no clue who I am, so I will try to rectify that. I live in Nashville, TN and I'm growing seven different fruiting varieties and 5 ornamental varieties. I just want to say that there is a tremendous wealth of knowledge here and I have learned so much already. I want to thank you all for all the information posted here. My goal, like many others here, is to eventually produce fruit. I want a home-grown Tennessee banana! When I tell people what I'm attempting, I get some crazy looks, but I figured that would happen. At least here I know I'm among like minded people. ![]() I'm growing the following, ordered from Going Bananas: Veinte Cohol FHIA 01 (Goldfinger) FHIA 02 (Mona Lisa) Ice Cream (Blue Java) Grand Nain Praying Hands SH 3640 Also growing a Basjoo from Home Depot. I've been growing this one for a few years. In my climate, I don't have to dig it up or cover it. It just comes back year after year and it's basically a 3x3 mat now. Pretty much a plant and forget banana. I also just ordered Siam Ruby Red and an Ensete Maurellii from Northern Tropics. I'm looking forward to getting those in and growing. Well,, that's a little about me. Thanks again for all of your collective wisdom and advice. I love it here. ![]() |

Welcome to the org officially! Looks like your already growing some really cool types of banana plants, cant wait to see those fruit for you. I'm currently growing basjoos, ice cream, saba, ensete maurelli, and thai black. Only the ensete, ice cream, and saba are a good size and Im not expecting fruit this year, but hopefully some day. So far velutina is the only species I have gotten to fruit and the bananas were more like seed pods than fruit!

Sounds like you have some nice ones too. I'm not expecting fruit this year either, but I am thinking of getting a grow light and see if I can keep them growing, even if slowly, or at least holding their own over winter here.I am also starting some cold hardy palms from seed too. Just checked the bags and my Sabal minor seeds have sprouted. I also have a blood orange, a navel orange, and a persian lime. I love Florida. My wife is now convinced that, since I can't move south, I'm trying to bring Florida to Tennessee. I guess she's right. ![]() |
