Hello,
Just found this forum while looking for information on the hardy musa basjoo banana tree. I was at my local hydroponic shop the other day and they have a 3-4ft banana tree growing in a bucket system and thought i would try the same thing but insead using a 5 gallon bucket,36" bubble wand and an air pump. Has anyone here or is anyone currently growing a banana tree hydroponically? What would be the best way to start a banana? from seed or rhizome? and where would be a reliable place to get banana seeds or rhizomes? Thanks, Bill

I haven't grown one hydroponically, but I've grown a bordelon banana in a small mum pan container in a shallow pond display with cannas and elephant ears for the ponds that I sell, for two different years now. The display has 8-12 inches of water depending on if it rained or not recently, and when it gets less water than that, I usually top it off with water from my watering hose that's injected with a 2:100 solution of 20-20-20 fertilizer.
I messed up and let it get frozen this year, the display is outdoors, but it seems to be recovering in the greenhouse slowly. I don't see why it couldn't be done. The main thing with hydro is to get your chemicals in the right concentration and make sure aeration reaches the roots. You'd have to monitor the solution from time to time and make sure that it didn't get too concentrated from evaporation of the water, and probably do a complete change of the water once in a while just to be on the safe side. I'd say if you got your info from that store, they'd be willing to help you out with some fertilizers, etc for your setup and maybe even a little know how. Especially if you go there on a slow day!

Welcome Bill!
The tasty edible ones that are the most popular have no seeds so you need a tissue cultured plant or someone with corms (rhizomes) available. There are some interesting kinds you can grow from seed though... You can check out www.rarebananas.com for corms of mine when I have them available. Regards |
