Default Blackening leaves in heatwave
I am very worried, in the past few days my banana looks sick. Am I overwatering? Please help, I really don't want to lose them.

I have uploaded images, hopefully you can see them.

Hi Kubali,

Thanks for the welcome. I plotted myself on the map, but not sure if it worked, I am from Glass House Mountains, Queensland.

I am not sure what they are as they were already here, but am guessing Ladyfingers.

They were doing so well until the heatwave, 45c here the day before yesterday. I am not sure if they are sun damaged, or if it is because I watered heaps during that time to try to save them. I lost heaps of lovely plants this week

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Having just experienced the heat wave myself I would say it's sunburn. If your soil is well drained it almost impossible to over water. If the soil is water logged and not draining they will suffer. We only had 42c and there was some leaf burn. With the rain we had yestreday they should bounce back. Good luck

Hi Sharon,
you mention heatwave. Do you live 'Down Under'? Anyway if that plant is in a pot
and the pot exposed to direct sunshine, you may well be cooking the corm. That
has happened to me even here in Canada. When I moved the pot into the shade
the plant recovered.

They have been there for a while, one for about 6 months and one for about two, but both have made huge growth. The big one has grown to around 2 metres from being about 1/2 metre when planted, and the other from a sucker to about 1/2-3/4 of a metre in around 2 months. They were flying until the heatwave. We have sandy soil, so I was not really worried about overwatering. I think it must be sunburn, 44c+ is enough to make me melt too!

Thanks Olaf, I do live "down-under" and my bananas are permanently planted in the soil. So, while cooking the corm may be possible in these extremes I do have it well mulched to keep the corm a bit cooler.

Thanks Brod, I really think that was the issue since I had leaf burn on a large number of shade plants too. It has been so dry that a Leopard tree that normally protects the shade garden looks as if it is not long for this world. Thankfully we had really strong storms last night with good rains. Today is much cooler, so I will use Seasol on it all tonight and fingers crossed they will make a come-back.
