About 2 weeks ago my wife totalled our car. We have two Mercury Grand Marquis. We each drive about 30mi to work one way, and we have 3 kids so we need lots of room. The obvious choice for me was a Crown Vic or Grand Marquis. These cars are built on the ancient design of a V-8 with rear wheel drive. This platform is reffered to as the 'Panther' line of cars from Ford. The Lincholn Town Car, Crown Vic, and Grand Marquis are all built on top of the same design. This is the last American made full frame rear wheel drive car on the market. These cars always get high marks in crash test ratings and here is living proof. My wife overcorrected after drifting off into the ditch on her way home from work. She lost control and shot across the road hitting a big oak tree head on. The car began to flip end over end into another tree. With the back of the car turning over the front. She hit the second tree while airborn. This sent the car into a roll/spin. The car traveled about 60 feet in the air, landed upside down and rolled over in the ditch right side up. My wife climbed out of the car with only a scape on her forearm from the airbag. She did not go to the hospital. Her back was sore for a good while but she is fully recovered now and was here at home with our family less than one hour after the wreck.
There has been a concern with these cars catching on fire when involved in severe rear end accidents. This is because the gas tank is located in outside of the rear axle. Most accounts of these cars catching fire involves police who were stopped on the side of the road and were rear ended. If you think about it, an officer is much more likely to be involved in this type of wreck because they spend the whole day on the road and much of their time stopped by a busy road writing tickets.
