Hi all. This is my first post here! :woohoonaner:

Here's me (with a nice dwarf Brazilian rack):

Anyway...

So I planted this pup bare root a couple of weeks ago. Blue Java I got from a grower here in FL. Since planting, it pushed out the new cigar leaf on top. Then today I noticed a leaf popping out of the side of the psuedostem. Weird...
I think I have seen this happen before- someone may have posted about it on here. It seems the best thing to do would be to cut the top off and allow this new growth to take over. Am I right?

Anyone know what causes this phenomenon?

EDIT: I guess my images aren't showing up here. I tried uploading to my account, didn't work. Tried /IMG-ing the google drive links, not working. So I guess you'll have to just click the links til I figure it out.

This is a common occurrence with newly transplanted suckers. What happens is the pseudostem can be slightly damaged during transplant sometimes creating a sort of blockage, and when growth resumes the new leaves cannot make it through the old pseudostem so it will bust out of the side and start forming a new one. You can cut away the old pseudostem above the new growth, or just let it be, either way it will be fine and sort itself out as it grows. All things considered its a good sign as it means the sucker has rerooted and is continuing growth.

Welcome to bananarama!

I had this alt.pup behavior also, when I did some salvage of banana plants from a demolition site. They were pretty trashed, so a number of them (even with 6 foot stems) took a side 'exit'. It's amazing how persistent they are. Awesome!
