I hope this little one (bronze laterita) isn't shooting out pups and a flower because I'm killing it! Brent your pup bloomed while still short but I don't remember it looking this short and mine doesn't look as healthy as the photo of yours.
I'm really excited about it possibly sending out a flower but apprehensive thinking that something is wrong.

yep its flowering, nothing to worry about though. If its already making pups your sure to have it live on, sure doesn't look like you're killing it to me.

YES!!! I love flag leaf "season"!
I'd say in 3-5 days you'll be taking pictures of the first bract opening. Then comes the ants who love the nectar from the flowers.

You go girl! Looks like your first bloom is on the way. Don't worry about it blooming at a short height. You were one of the first people I sent lateritas out to this spring, so you got some of the larger pstems, even though they were cut back, physiologically they were older, so they are blooming shorter. That's why mine bloomed at like a foot tall. I ended up cutting that one off and another stalk bloomed a couple of weeks later. My pot of laterita now has about 6 pstems coming up, with the tallest one being about 4', but no more blooms yet. I'm expecting to see a flag any day now. Last year my pot of laterita had up to 5 or 6 blooms on it at any one time. I wouldn't be surprised to see you get a bloom off of one of your pups late in the season.

Ohhh, ok I'm starting to understand it now. You really have beautiful plants. I'm looking forward to a clump with several blooms at once and saying, "I've got to contain these, they're spreading everywhere!" :jump:

The war with bugs is on! I've been misting the undersides of all the leaves on all nana plants as I checked for spider mites since the subject has been coming up a lot. Yup, I have them. Also picked a japanese beetle off of a Saba leaf today. Taylor, thanks for the heads up to watch for the ants.
I thought I read an old post sometime back about upping the potassium now? Or is that just for edible nana plants?

Yes you did! I sure didn't expect it to happen for me until next year though! This is due to your healthy plants! I've shown my husband the pictures of my laterita's mommy on your pictures. LOL

Scot... no green thumb here! This has been such a struggle for me. I have told myself that if I learn what to do.. and do it... I should be able to be sucessful. So far the tropicals are doing ok, but the garden vegetables are still hating me!

Update: I looked at my laterita (which now has about 6-8 pstems growing in the pot) when I got home yesterday and the largest pstem (about 5' tall) is setting a bud! Should be open in a couple more days. We're getting some rain from what's left of Dolly so that might slow it down a bit. I'll post a pic or two when I get a chance.

I can't wait to see a picture! My pups are growing good and I think they'll get tall before the end of summer.
My bloom is still opening up layer after layer but the little yellow banana flowers.. don't know what to call them ... fall off after a little green base grows. The pups are outgrowing the mom so does that mean that she is spent and now living on through the pups or do ornamentals continue to live on after a bloom?

The little green bases you speak of are the bananas. They don't very big at all. Unfortunately, the mother plant dies in ornamentals just like an edible variety would. You'll have plenty of pups to replace her, trust me!
Taylor

Brent's right, and I think you are referring to the male flowers (the female flowers stay on- edibles and ornamentals)

Sorry...I don't see any sign of a flag leaf. What you are seeing there is just the next leaf getting ready to unroll.

SNC would love to hear an update on your laterita!! How's the bloom looking?
Paula, mine came out like a little cone but that looks like a smaller leaf coming out. What kind of banana plant do you have there. I'm not experienced enough yet to just be able to tell by looking at it and I know someone else is probably going to be able to tell you exactly if you are close to having a flag leaf!
On the male and female flower subject.... if I have a male flower then does that mean that I may not get a female flower this time? My flower is still unraveling, petal by petal with the cone getting smaller and the yellow flowers that have the little nub of green banana continue to fall off.. green nub and all. I have 5 pups on it now also last I looked. They just sneak up on me when I'm least expecting it.
SNC... where are you?
Brent did you post a new pic of your laterita pups and I missed it?

No, I haven't had time to post the photo yet. I took some pics on Sat. just been too busy to post. I'll try to soon.
As for the flowers, you may be thinking of it wrong. Bananas aren't seperate male-female plants (dioecious) like some plants (persimmon, hollies, or osage orange for example); rather they have both male and female flowers on the same plant. In edible types, the first flowers you see, and the one's that produce the fruit, are female flowers. The ones that come along later and just fall off without forming fruit are the male flowers. That is why you hear people say you can cut the bud off once you stop getting fruit forming. Because the rest of the flowers will be male from that point on. It should be the same with the ornamental varieties such as Musa laterita, velutina, etc. Hope my explanation is clear.
