Hello from the LowCountry of South Carolina ! I am a former TV photo journalist for a major network in LosAngles. I retired from that profession to follow my passion of growing tropicals at my home. I live near Hilton Head Island in South Carolina where I experience very hot and humid summers but relatively mild winters.

While living in Mission Viejo California, I developed a huge love of Citrus Trees. I remember traveling down the 5 freeway and having the beautiful scent of orange blossoms treat my senses. But, alas, Smog Free Orange County Calif. gave way to Orange Free Smog County. The orange and avocado trees gave way to large housing tracks. So I brought my love of Tropical Plants to my retirement home.

I grow Black Pepper plants, Pineapples , Coco plants, Allspice Trees, Cinnamon trees and of course Bananas . Some of my Tropicals are in the early stage of growth and some are in advanced stages of fruiting maturity. Oh, I also grow Carnivorous plants to help keep down the "critter" population.

I am looking forward to getting a good deal of information, on growing Bananas, from this forum.

Do you grow Persian lime trees? I'll be looking for one later.

Fine venture and place to launch it. My mom's family homestead is in nearby Beaufort. Have you tried your luck with pawpaws? You are probably borderline too low, they are more at home up in dad's country Boone NC, but I think there are varieties that will have a chance. Good luck with all.

Funny you should ask about Paw-Paws... I just got a couple of different varieties of the plants and they are growing quickly.... But probably won't be of planting size until next year... I look forward to getting my first crop of the specialty fruit in a couple of years....Thanks for the welcome !

You're in a nice area. Are you near Palmetto Bluff? I was down there in 2008 I think, to do an advertising film for them. It was 18 degrees outside and we were supposed to be doing this in the summer. Froze my ass off!

I use to work for Palmetto Bluff when I came here when I retired from ABC in LA.... The weather is unpredictable in the winter... I have learned to live with the humidity and the bugs... Not like Orange County California... but no problems with freeway chases and illegal aliens.. I just want to grow my Tropicals and listen to the quiet of the evenings......

Well, one film guy to another, welcome aboard. We're on opposite sides of the camera, but that's what makes a shoot complete!
