In the 2007 Hong kong Food Exhibition, Del Monte is showing off what seemed to look like cavendish type bananas as "Philippine Honeys".
Anyone here know more about this?

Hey People,
Have some Honey Nanners! :)
I'm serious. Was quite a little bit insulted by unexpected remarks from you but I am over it after a few seconds and can take them as a joke. A member of Philippine Rare Fruit Grower has recently been there. And here's the post by Oliver, take note that PI means Philippine Islands, a shortcut name for the Philippines:
I recently visited the 2007 Hong kong Food Exhibition which included some booths from the PI sponsored I guess by the Dept of Agriculture=frankly the booths were a disgrace little product displayed=one exhibitor was ZVG Farm-staffed by PI exhibitors clearly more interested in talking to each other or going shopping-What was worse the booths were right beside the USA exhibitors staffed with great product with outgoing friendly staff clearly trying and doing a great job.I have the full exhibitors list is anyone is interested.
On a lighter note Del Monte were there promoting a new variety of PI Banana, suggestively (?) branded as "Philippine Honeys" from the Mountain-looks like a Cavendish but isn't.
Oliver
So am not really kidding. Do we have limited world or tiny mind set in this banana forum or what?

And so it means that no one here has a clue as to what that banana is, except for some imaginations I need not dare elaborate...
Anyway, thanks for the parodies to my serious inquiry...

I'm sure if someone had a serious answer they would tell you.
Maybe Gabe will chime in.

Where will they be selling these? Will they hit the market in the US?
I know somebody who could possibly put you in touch with Del Monte. If you would like, PM me and I'll give you a name and email address if you want to look into it some more.

Joe:
I myself am really amused with the joke. Here and every forum I went to seems like everything goes including people with sense of humor.
It takes away the melancholy for the moment.

My wife was looking over my shoulder when I read this thread.
Officially I am NOT interested in Philippine Honeys.
But if they are the least bit hardy, I'd like to know more.

I have to confess about the painful reminders of the honest joke by fellow nanner growers here. It just so happens that I am sensitive to issue of mail-to-order brides especially from the Philippines where I can't blame the people who have participated. Yes indeed, i cannot ignore the fact that I have relatives married through that scheme, but fortunately, they remain very happily married. Being of Filipino ancestry and descent, I feel quite some sting in my pride when Philippines is more known for its mail-to-order brides than for its unique bananas in this forum. The jokes were not anticipated, so it set me off, just try to understand this soft-spot of mine.
I'd rather have the Philippines be more known for its unique flora, fauna and bananas than mail-to-order "Honeys"...

Thanks Jarred! Might do that in due time. However, I value more the experiences of people and participants here rather than those companies who describe the plants so that they will sell, and so you don't get the actual mileage as "described".

Joe, I think it has more to do with the plural form of the word Honey. If you had said Honey Bananas or Philippine Honey Bananas no one would have made the association. Kinda like Honey Tangerines. You could have said Swiss Honeys, American Honeys, Chinese Honeys, etc etc and gotten the same response from the guys. I think most men when they hear the word Honeys immediately think of women regardless what part of the world they come from. At least I do! :03: Hello ladies ;)

Could be intentional on part of Del Monte to grab attention, or it wasn't remembered well by Oliver who originally posted the message. I tried to relay the message as accurately as I can in its original form.

Joe,
You and I have enough history, so you'll know that I have the utmost respect for you knowledge of all things fruiting. But every once in a while, a guy just can't resist a nice pitch right over the plate. Looking forward to your posting the answer to your own question, when you find it.

Jon, thanks! The fault is on my part, and I have acknowledge that you guys meant no ill-will at all. It was an honest joke. But sometimes, once in a while, there's some portion of me that becomes more sensitive and could not change those easily. Thank you for understanding as I try to be a little bit thicker on those sensitive areas. But rest assured, I took that all in good camaraderie, and so you should not worry.
