Hi
I am meribow and I just bought a banana plantation , jeep, and banana boat, so I went online to find a little banana history, and your site came up. The plantation is from Medellin Colombia, and is a few inches high. ( What did you think?). My husband and I live in Michigan, and not having a greenhouse have never thot of growing bananas, but this year we are moving to Central Florida......
After looking at your forum, I'm wondering if I could grow a small banana something.....and how hard is it to grow Dragon Fruit? What would be a good starter banana for someone who knows almost nothing about care and feeding of bananas. Advice anyone? |

Welcome! Sounds like you are moving to zone 9b. I suggest that you check out the garden centers when you get down here... you'll find bananas and dragon fruit offered at most of them... including big box stores. I suggest picking up a banana that you can find locally on the cheap, it's easy to find Cavendish. Then you can try growing it without putting out a lot of cash first. Plan on amending your soil first if you are going to be planting in the ground. Dragon fruit is easy to grow. Right after the holidays the garden centers start stocking up and there is a lot to choose from. If you are going to be anywhere near Apopka FL you will be in one of the main plant producing areas of the state... Let us know your progress.

I grow both, and they are very different plants, but they are both fun to grow. I'd say get both.

Welcome! You'll be just fine and have enough time to learn. Bananas aren't too hard, and plus, I live in zone 8 and yet I seem to be growing quite a collection. Haven't had anything fruit yet due to slow winters (overwintering, bringing indoors, etc) but I'm getting closer.
I've no experience with Dragonfruit, but I plan to grow some, and I doubt they're hard. I think the only true difficulties are super tropicals (mangosteen, vanilla, marang, cacao, etc) |
