Thanks,
Bottom heat is about 35°C - 95°F.
Half of the seeds are sandpaper scarified.
(the one germinated was not)

That old chestnut. To scarify or not to scarify.
That's awesome! Somebody told me banana seeds never grow true to species - each seed-grown plant is different. Is that true?

I can't understand why banana seeds would not be true to species.

i have mine in dowe egberts coffee jars sitting on top of radiator. water changed daily.
airing cupboard useless since combi boiler went in attic.
i'm also trying post soak seeds in a ziplock bag with usual damp perlite\vermiculite in a thermos flask of water at 35degs. might work instead of propagator and cheaper...
too early to know results yet.
Awesome! Could you give us an update so we can see how fast they grow?

is the glass jar just for humidity or do you put hot water in it? what is its function?

Not hot water tank, just little water tank.
This compensates for the loss by evaporation (not sure the pot is closed properly)

I purchased these same seeds. I see that you almost just layed the on the surface with just maybe an 1/8 covering of soil. Is this true? Some tips for germinating would be very helpful.

Welcome!
All seeds were sandpaper scarified and then soaked for 7 days in tepid water. (the seeds were in a glass at the top of the boiler and the water was changed daily)
You can use 1g/L of epsom salt in water, i did. I read somewhere (http://www.bananas.org/f30/seed-germination-using-ga3-5909-2.html#post188348) that can help.
Seeds were placed in a closed germination pot (coco soil).
Most of the seeds are just below the soil surface= the seeds are covered with about 5mm (0.2 in. ?) of coco soil.
The pot stands at the top of the boiler. (Instead you can use a heat mat.)

I started Some Itinerans and some Helens about 2 weeks ago and have what appears to be one sprout of each, but they are so small? It looks like a tiny sprig of grass. Is this normal. It is much smaller than the pic you have.

I've just noticed the first of mine has germinated in a stewart propagator which is sitting on top of one of my radiators - non thermostatic propagator and i bought an inside outside thermometer at Lidl, which is intended for the few cars that dont have one - mine has. min 23c max about 36c. rather a handy device for £3.99 brand is auriol in small silver grey box if they have any left.
plan b is vermiculite\compost mix in 200g dowe egbert coffee jars in a copper planter - the type that looks like a fish kettle. the coffee jars are a perfect fit and it all sits on top of a radiator at an elderly relatives house, as she has heating on all day. will update on success.

Is it just me or are banana seed just the most hardest to germinate. I bought some ensete glaucum and its ben a month with no results. They were on a heating pad, next i put them in a zip lock back with peat moss. Maybe this will work or are the seeds i got duds. I broke one open and appeared to be fine with nice white embryo. Need some help. I also did the same with king kong banana seeds with one sprouting then just died al the sudden. It seems to me that banana seeds germinate when they just really want to with no time schedule.

You have to have a bit of patience. One month is nothing when trying to germinate seeds. You need to keep them in the same place and wait.

well, i got mine 28/12/12 and they have been in the heated propagator since soaking. i used a craft knife on some to chip the outer, and on others a metal nail file. only 2 out of 50 sprouted so far.
ladybird gardens on ebay is where i get most of mine, but also scamptons succulents - mainly palms of various types. once grown on, i donate excess to charity stalls for them to sell

do they grow better with Peckham Spring bottled water then?
i use filtered tap water for ensete so yes, peckam spring water is good :ha::ha::ha:
Here the bottle is just for scale, on the first pic (01-11-2013) the ensete was just as bis as the bottle:

what a great thread very imformative. Thankyou all for shairing. I have some seed been scarified and soaked for around a week in warm water. there ready to sew but wasnt sure what to do.
If I pot them into a soil and perlite mix just pressing them into the soil and very lightly covering with some mosit perlite and place in my airing cupord were water tank is it sits at 30C do you think it should work and do the job of germinating them?
Kind regards

seems good , "Ensete Ventricosum sprouting! (http://www.bananas.org/f30/ensete-ventricosum-sprouting-17532.html#post214870)" thread has a good source of informations too.
As long as you have 30°c and you can preserve the percentage of humidity in the pot(s), they will germinate.
How many seeds do you have in this try?

There will be 10 seeds in 3 trays (sealed plastic tubs)
5 seeds in another.
4 difrent types of banana altogether.
10 Ensete Glaucum
10 musa Velutina
10 musa zebrina
5 chinese banana got them free lol
Im glad what i mention seems about right. i like the idea of just covering with moist perlite as it will make it easyer for me to move it aside to look see if there is any movement in the tubs.
It will amaze me if any grow ive been wanting to grow and worrying i cant do it for ages and after getting the seed and soaking them for a week in warm water and scarifing some of each they still feel and seem very hard like bullets. So how they manage to grow is mind bogling to me.
Yes ive seen the Ensete Ventricosum sprouting! read though and posted on there. all the info is good and very re asuring i just liek to work out how i will atempt to do it and see what others think incase its not a good idea etc.:08:
Im just soooo hoping somthing grows even 1 of each and id be delighted!:woohoonaner:
regards
