Hello, I am new to your forum and am looking for some advise on a couple of subjects.

1) where I can get cold hardy bananas for zone 8B? I already have the common musa basjoo (a small groove actually ) and a couple of the golden lotus but was hoping to get other types - one of my problems is that I am from Vancouver Canada and it is next to impossible to find anyone with anything "exotic" or bring anything into the country.

2) the golden lotus are relatively new plants as I have only had them about 4 months, but one has already produced about 6 pups, some of which are about 30cm tall (6 inches). The mother is only about 100cm tall (3.5ft) and I am looking for the best way to seperate the pups. As I mentioned I do have a small groove of musa basjoo but have never seperated these pups so this is something new to me and I want to do it properly for the lotus, and to do so before the temperature drops any further (it has been going down to 8 celcius / 46 farenheit at night now)
Thank you,

Abnshrek

Wow I saw 8b on your post preview and thought, Hey maybe he's close to me, then I saw BC! You're a half a continent away from 8b Florida. I was going to tell you to come by for some pups. You're still welcome but that's a long drive!

I saw you're in Zone 8b...
I'm in South Central Texas though!! :)

I have had Orinoco, D. Orinoco, Ice Cream, Thai Gold, Velutina & Bronze ornata do well in the ground for me here.

Wishing you success! ~Cheryl

Yo PMurphy: Welcome the banana bunch! Haven't been in long enough myself to be of any help with "cold hardy types", although I do have one, given to us by a dear friend who passed away some time ago. I don not know what type is is, but we mulch it each winter and it is behind a 5' wood fence ...good east wind protection from the Columbia Gorge!

I comes back each spring, but never have seen it flower. However I have never fertilized or cared for it properly! That is until I joined this great group, and am learning many things. Stay Safe, Tom

Hey Pam

I live in zone 7 (south of Sweden) and have a variety of Dwarf Cavendish. As for separating pups, I don't know how others go about it but all I do is tear them away, making sure to drag roots with them. Have done this with five so far, all when they were around five inches tall and pretty leafy, and they are looking happy as Larry and growing strong. Anyone have any input on this?

There are a number of threads on separating pups. Some say Orinoco is the fastest growing corm, but I think a DC is close 2nd if its not first.. DC's are pup machines. :^)
