I guess I'm one of our newest members! :D I live in sunny Granada Hills, California and probably one of the youngest banana growers out there at 17 years old. I just started growing with two Ice Creams this summer, and I'm looking forward to getting fruit and more varieties. And besides bananas, I grow black mission figs, pomegranates, and lemons in my yard. I'm looking forward to becoming an active member of the community here!

Greetings! I think Gabe was pretty young when he started, too.

Thanks. The lemons in my yard don't do so well though because of the high winds we get in the fall and winter. But it shouldn't be anything my bananas can't handle!:ha:

Welcome from Visalia!!!
Hey, I started out with a few spider plants when I was a young teen and now a have a huge jungle! I only really started growing bananas last year, 2010. Half of my potted ones died. My California Golds survived, tho. We are putting up a greenhouse soon, so will be able to better protect my potted plants. I just purchased some ice creams this year, so am hoping for bananas by next year. It can get pretty hot here - up to 110 in the summertime. I did notice that my fruiting bananas that are under the shade cloth (at 40% shade) are doing far better than the ones out in full sun.
Good luck and have fun!

I have an Ice Cream right now that gets full sun for a good part of the day, but I'm going to have to move it. It has a mild case of root rot and it's planted in badly draining soil. I'm moving it to a nearby spot that gets about the same amount of sun (possibly a little bit more) and has more room. This time I'm planting it in good soil. I also have another Ice Cream that's in a container. Next season I plan on expanding my collection by adding Velutina, 1000 Fingers, 'Gigantea,' and 'Mahoi.' Unfortunately that's probably all that I can fit in my backyard right now...:(

Welcome Caliboy!
I was born and raised in the SF Valley! Graduated from GHHS! Go Highlanders! (They still are the Highlanders, aren't they??)
I moved away after the '94 earthquake and landed here in Jacksonville, FL.
Good luck with your bananas, the Valley is a good place to raise them.

Wow, really? That's cool! And I still think that they are the Highlanders. I just hope that my two Ice Creams are able to pull through their first winter.

I kept my banana plant alive all summer even after the neigbors cat knocked it off the shelf. it got sick but i learned how to make insect soap and now its healthy again but its not very big so i cant have another one yet. but it will be. im going to grow it till its as tall as the house. =D
Awesome! Deadmau5 totally kicks and i like hard style and psyko punkz too. i got Cage the elephants new album last summer and Pendulum and Foo Fighters and Senses fail and there really kewl.

As for me, I have two plants planted in the ground, both of them an unknown variety. I plan on expanding my fruit trees next spring to Cherimoya, Dwarf Red, Real Ice Cream, 1000 Fingers, Mango, Passionfruit, and Physical Graffiti Dragonfruit. And Pendulum is beast too! I totally love DnB. I should take a look at that music thread.

I dont know what all those plants are but thats amazing. i cant put my banana plants in the ground cuz its too cold here so im growing mine in a pot till summer. mangos rool and there my favorite fruit.
Pendulums total beast! Self vs Self was epic and that cover they made for Linkin Parks song The Catalyst was better than Linkin Park. Do you like Attack Attack? Doctor Shavargo part 3 is bomb! btw the music threads in the tiki hut section and its called What are you listening to.

Yeah, I already posted there. I'm so glad I live in Southern California. I don't really have to worry about the cold here, the biggest threat to my plants is wind. The fall and winter winds have been known to blow down small trees! That's why I'm sticking to wind resistant and dwarf varieties. But since Dwarf Red has bad cold resistance (pretty much all red bananas have bad cold resistance) I might have to wrap it in the winter. Mangoes and cherimoyas have bad wind resistance so I'll have to plant them in a protected spot, but dragon fruit has good wind resistance.
I recently went to a local high-end nursery and I was surprised to see what kinds of plants they had there. They had papayas, guavas, dragon fruit, cherimoyas, several varieties of bananas (even what appeared to be a Siam Ruby, which is rare), passion fruit, and lots and lots of lemons and oranges.
This is dragon fruit:

This is cherimoya:

I need to check out that remix of The Catalyst. But I get most of the music I listen to from Pandora nowadays.
