Pauly, you got my interest up. I've been looking through that big pdf document and see infant mortality rates dropped fairly evenly from about 20/1,000 in 1970 to 12.6/1,000 in 1980 and continued to decline to 6.79/1,000 in 2004 when that report was prepared (see page 94) . That all seems like what one would expect with the improvement in medical care over the years. But I don't see anything to compare these rates to Bangladesh, etc.
I do believe I've heard something to the effect that the USA has one of the highest infant mortality rates of industrialized countries, but I'm not too confident of my memory on that one.
