Newton's mathematical model of gravity, which was part of his
potential theory or "force at a distance" is not only remarkable, but of tremendous practical use in engineering. However, his concept of the physical nature of gravity was incorrect. Not that modern observers are doing any better: we know more about what it isn't than what it is.
