I'm growing Manzano and it's actually one of the varieties I really want to fruit.
Mine is still a pup so I can't really provide any input on the skinny stem issue.

BBJ just recently picked up a Manzano growing on the side of the road and his pictures show it to have a pretty beefy pseudostem - not skinny at all.
