Many times grasshoppers and caterpillars will just do a taste test and move on.
Woodpeckers and borers will make a single hole and when the leaf unfurls looks like little machine gun holes evenly spaced across the leaf.

I get tent caterpillars(those are obvious to see) on occasion in Ohio and I spray those fellas.
