The liquid gypsum will interact with the clay, and over time reduce it's "sticky-ness" (ionic bonding). In addition, the compost material (slightly acidic carbonaceous material) Nate is adding will then be able to penetrate it and further make the clay somewhat more hospitable for plant roots.
