I would say, that this depends very much on the general condition of the soil in the area in which you
plant your basjoos. If it is generally good humus, you only have to dig a hole, which accommodates
the roots comfortably.
If the soil is not so good, what you are doing sounds good to me. A 3 feet diameter seems to allow
plenty of room for your pups to emerge and prosper. They all come out of the corm and not from
underground runners (rhizomes).
You should see some of the tiny pots, which some of the posters here grow their bananas in.
