whats the best information you received from this site so far?
so far what was some of the best info you received from this site ?
|
Re: whats the best information you received from this site so far?
So much to choose from!
How to peel a banana properly, and how to build a bunch prop, spring immediately to mind, but I'd say more the general knowledge base about all the wonderful bananas out there is what really makes this site great. |
Re: whats the best information you received from this site so far?
It is hard to say, there's so much I have learned about varieties, and care of bananas. If I had not learned about propping bananas and had my first stalk break, I would have been very sad. So that might be most important.

Re: whats the best information you received from this site so far?
Well this is a hard one. Its all important. But the one thing that is really helping me so far is the fact that bananas are tougher than what I thought they were. I have been worring to much about my banana plants but im finding out they are real tough.

Re: whats the best information you received from this site so far?
after the first few winters i stopped worrying about my bananas as much too... especially the Orinoco that i thought was basjoo.:ha: i did not do anything to protect it this year since it took the snow last year. i didnt have to do any propping at all because i only got a stress bloom after i pruned suckers ..maybe propping will be useful next year??

Re: whats the best information you received from this site so far?
The best information in my opinion is that I have found out that bananas connect peoples in souch many ways that I couldnt even imagine that before. This is high value site in my eys ;).

Re: whats the best information you received from this site so far?
No doubt the best thing about this site is the people here. Some come and go, some have been lost. The exchange of info and friendships made by people across the country and around the world is worth more than what we probably all came here for in the first place which is hard to find anywhere else banana growing and cultivating information. Great place to be.:woohoonaner:

Re: whats the best information you received from this site so far?
I've learned many things since being a member, but I think I'm going to have to go with Bob's and Ante's sentiments.. It's all good :^)

Re: whats the best information you received from this site so far?
I agree with Ante and Bob, I have been a member here for three years now and by far, I have to say the best and most important thing I've learned is the The people here at the the Org. are the best, Thank you

Re: whats the best information you received from this site so far?
I agree that the site is good and the people are great. The best information I have received so far was from Tog. I had just joined the org and I was freaking out about a Basjoo I had purchased.

I am very grateful to the many people here who take the time to explain what they are thinking about and how they perceive things. It's really been a joy to meet you all.

Re: whats the best information you received from this site so far?
Everything I know about bananas I learned here. I've learned so much about dirt and fertilizer. I've gained acceptance that I can't always grow what I want until I get a greenhouse.
There are people here that I value dearly and depend upon to answer my questions and I should probably let them all know as I know that most would never know that I hold them in such high esteem and everyone needs a pat on the back now and then. I came here as a firm believer that I couldn't grow anything without chemicals. Now I worry about the bee population and even appreciate the black jumping spiders that infest my nanas as I know they're eating bad bugs. (I'm terrified of spiders) I've learned the importance of organic food, the thrill of looking up at all those amazing banana plants, how to spot things that go wrong with my plants and how to fix them. I learned that a banana will seperate into three segments if you punch it on the end :ha: Yeah, I went right into the kitchen and tried it! And then I did it again and again to show family and friends as they came around! It's almost spring time! Deb |
Re: whats the best information you received from this site so far?
Tough question but if I had to narrow it down to just one piece of information I'd say it's the info from Gabe that my Pisang Klotek is in the Mysore group. That is a question that has been eating at me for a long time and I seriously doubt I would have learned this anywhere else. :)

Re: whats the best information you received from this site so far?
Aside from how to grow bananas years ago, very recently is what Mitchel (Momese) taught me how to use my new Camera. Mitchel patiently showed me step by step how to use my camera in action pictures.
For many years I've been satisfied keeping blurry pictures of my kids doing their favorite sports growing up. And Mitchel taught me the right way finally. My regret is I should have asked this question here years ago. Thanks Mitchel and the banana forum. |

This forum is successful because of the varied members throughout the world who contribute one way or another be it pictures or their expertise on the subject. What excited me the most to buy my camera was Mitchel's pictures of his puppies on "Reminder about offensive content" . The pictures were so stunning that I told myself by hook or by crook I'm going to get that camera. And so I did. I am now enjoying the pictures I took from my son's basketball games. Not only me but my whole family. I am also now eager to go to his basketball games to take pictures (and movies) because of my years lost oppurtunities before owning the camera. Without this forum, I will never know......... |

Re: whats the best information you received from this site so far?
Richard, the Nikon D40 has been out long enough now that you can find some deals on them. Probably much better than these but this is what's available right now on Craigslist in your area.
Nikon D40 DSLR with 18-55mm AF-S DX Zoom Nikkor Lens Or search a bit for a D70 nikon d70 body I don't really know Cannon but I'm sure there are deals to had there too. The thing to keep in mind in choosing between the two is that used Nikon lenses are cheaper and more plentiful and that is where you want to spend your money! The camera that Benny bought is not a DSLR but does have a really nice Zies lens. The same quality lens for a DSLR would be very pricey even used. But....like I said when those cameras break they are a throw away because they cost more to fix then to buy another used one. On DSLR's you can check the click count which is also important. I can't remember how many clicks is too many but a simple search would tell you that. If you find something still under warranty make sure it's an American camera, not a gray market one. I have a friend who also bought a new D90 but unknowingly bought a gray market one and of course it has problems and the warranty is not so great to say the least. I told her to return it as soon as she found out but she decided not to and now regrets that decision. She's now looking for another camera, a full frame Nikon with an American warranty! |
Re: whats the best information you received from this site so far?
Learn something every day! Apparently Canon can use Nikon glass but not vice versa. Also the Nikon D40 and D60 can only use AFS glass so if you want to use some of the older manual focus glass you'll want to avoid those bodies and go for a D50, D70, D80 or D90. But Canon messed things up in 85.

Re: whats the best information you received from this site so far?
I learned that liberal and conservative people can get along in the common goal of growing bigger bananas and other plants as long as dick cheney isn't posting pictures of dead animals, telling dirty jokes or talking about his taxbreaks :^)

i thought i would let the members here know that i will not be visiting here as much in the near future.. this decision has nothing to do with the recent events.. i decided not to start a new thread because this thread has been derailed already so i thought its only fair for the thread starter to derail.:ha:
