That grow from scraps picture got me wondering
 

So I tried 5 Romaine and 1 Napa stem. 1 Romaine is fine but the Napa started sprouting then rotted. Jury's out on the other 4 Romaines. Matters not--they were going to the compost bin anyway. (I've had mixed luck with leeks and onions before.)

I was wondering if anyone has ever tried growing mushroom stems? Caught a sale on buttons and was thinking I'd give it a shot. All of the sites that say it's possible also say it's very difficult. And they don't report their successes or failures. Gee, thanks. Bon jour? The others found in searching give detailed instructions about capturing spores and mention cardboard. I'm not that into much work this at this point.

I was planning on making stuffed mushrooms with some of these and the stems go in but will skimp a bit and give it a try. (My compost bin loves me as I do her!)

BTW, I have discovered that you can slice and freeze mushrooms for later use in sauces and sauteing and they're really very, very good.
