Re: Current weather

Yesterday it hit 84 with 40% RH. Beautiful day. So I dug a trench for a new irrigation line after I found that the pool planting bed was fitted with outside yard access. Will tap off a riser in the palm bed. Then the jet pump died. It never ends.

I see there is rain in the forecast for coastal San Diego County this Tuesday. If we get another inch it will be almost normal for the season (Sept.1 - Aug.31).

83 degrees, 9% humidity, and 25 mph winds with 50 mph gusts. Not good banana weather! Makes me think seriously about getting rid of all the tall varieties, which are taking a serious beating, with shredded, stripped, and snapped leaves.

I could cry:
Last month gusty winds broke one of my banana plants in fruit (the verdict on this one is still out), but today's gusty winds snapped my beautiful Blenheim Apricot tree which was loaded with fruits.Sad day!

Sorry to hear that. :( It's a hard way to learn that plants have limits and thinning out fruits can be a good strategy. Darn! I hate loosing a crop. Have done that many times in the past.

Re: Current weather

Those of us in southern California are reeling with "Santa Ana" conditions. The wind has been blowing steady off the inland desert states (Nevada, Arizona) for a day and a half now. Humidity has been below 15% for the duration. At midnight today it was 70F, rose quickly to 90F with sunlight and peaked at 95F. Now after sunset it is back to 75F at 10pm with humidity around 10%. Those dry winds ... tomorrow will be a full watering day.

Thanks. In the future I just have to do it.
Would it be advisable to plant a new tree now or should I wait until fall?

If it broke off well above the graft then there is no reason to plant a new tree.

Also, in your location most perennials can be safely planted 10 months out of the year.

Re: Current weather

Still gusty winds today.
103 F at 2:30PM. It has never been that hot at our place in 12 years.
Not that I am complaining, but seriously considering to jump into the Jacuzzi which is only 102 F to chill of a little bit ;)

Re: Current weather

It cooled off here earlier this afternoon compared to yesterday. Still a bit too hot for trenching.

Re: Current weather

Better today than yesterday here. Same temperature more or less, but not as windy. The wind with essentially no humidity is what really crisps up the plants!

Yesterday:
Sustained winds: 25-32 mph, gusts 35-49 mph
Temp: 93 max.
Humidity: 4% min.

Today:
Sustained winds: 10-23 mph, gusts 20-35 mph
Temp: 95 max.
Humidity: 5% min.

Re: Current weather

The weather forecast for today included a 10% chance of rain. It was cool most of the day, but no rain until I was relaxing on the back patio about an hour before sundown ... and then the skies opened up with about 1/8th inch soaker in about 5 minutes! I came inside and got this perspective from the Weather Underground:

This morning the humidity was in the low teens and now it is a ridiculous 4%.

Re: Current weather

Well, Ventura is "only" down to 7% humidity, combined with 20-30 mph winds and 97 degree heat. You can practically see the plants drying out before your eyes. Bizarre weather.

Re: Current weather

It's 1pm, 102F outside and single digit humidity. There are 3 brush fires burning in open land within a 10 mile radius of my home. Thankfully, no danger for me but folks in Carlsbad have some serious concern.
