Chicken /rooster ?
For all you chicken people I have these four chickens three silkies and a modern game. They say you cannot tell what the silkies are tell they get older and the modern game was to be a chicken but it was crowing this morning ! What will happen if one of the silkies are a rooster ? Can I leave them together ?
Thanks |
Re: Chicken /rooster ?
My neighbor has numerous roosters, I had 3 roosters at one time. I had more problems with roosters chasing the girls than amongst themselves. :^)

Yeah, it is kinda funny how the roosters all have their own harem. We used to have a bunch on the farm--they all roosted in the same tree at night, but during the day, each of the roosters would take his harem to his territory to feed. We had a wide mix--Banty's, Rhode Is. Reds, Dominickers. I have seen those Banty's put a whooping on the big RI Reds!

They usually get along ok when they're raised together, or amongst the flock. :02: It's the new comer that has a problem fitting in. Some will fight till death, or may not be allowed to eat.

Most of the fights we had were pretty short and usually over a hen or food. |
Re: Chicken /rooster ?
Yes, you can leave them together as they are currently. I would watch out for sides of bullying of one rooster against another and such. They tend to become aggressive after a certain age (depending on the breed as to how aggressive they become) and could possibly become an issue because of this. If you don't see any problems, though, feel free to keep them around, provided the crowing and/or lack of eggs from them isn't an issue.

Re: Chicken /rooster ?
He is so funny when he crows. His voice is cracking he stands there and flaps his wings like he is really trying to get that crow out ! Plus he is funny looking any how he is real tall like a road runner. Its a modern game. On top of that the people behind me have a couple of roosters its like there having a crowing contest

Re: Chicken /rooster ?
Yeah, roosters can be kinda disruptive/annoying at times. The media makes one to believe that they only crow right at dawn.....nope, that's just when they START crowing....which continues all day. :ha:
As for the voice cracking/wing flapping, LOL...adolescent cockerels crack me up sometimes. |

Oh, and Greg...all the chickens in that video were certainly cockerels/cocks not hens/pullets. You can tell by the elongated/curved tail-feathers and the pointed feathers on the neck (hackles). Not all breeds have a distinguished wattle/comb. Hens do not crow....they only cluck. |
Re: Chicken /rooster ?
The one Rooster with the dots, or lighter lines.. the kids call an "OREO Chicken". :^)
