Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?

As an aftermath of my oldest daughter's wedding this past weekend (beautiful wedding, could not have gone better, even with the heat), I'll be busily finding new homes for the many plants she chose for her "decor", being as how she has a degree in Sustainable Agriculture and Resource Management. The list includes canna (done !), euphorbias, salvias, and many, many succulents.........whew, I feel tired already. The ever shrinking lawn maybe?:ha:

Not planting, but thinking of it....has anyone any experience with the pink mimosa or silk tree? Saw one in bloom and wow....I think it would look great in my side yard!

I planted my second ever Elephant ear [don't know what kind]. I was told it will never get more than about 5 feet tall and the leaves will only be about 1-2 feet long but it's a start. :D
I also got a Jack's Giant [second photo] but I'm fighting spider mites before I plant it.

Planted this Purple Fountain Grass in my garden early this morning. Took shot just before I did...

This shot shows the pretty plumes that will develop soon...

Beautiful, even sitting in it's pot in front of a brick wall. I like how the red is picked up/echoed in the wall. Should look great in your garden!

Thank you, Bananaram 2, for the compliments about my Purple Fountain Grass! :waving: I sure am enjoying it in the garden now.

Today I dug a little hole to plant another Pampas Grass (Cortaderia Selloana)perennial seedling. This plant will be six feet tall with a huge spread also. Sprouted the seeds myself. Looking forward to seeing the pink plumes...

Well, not today, but over the last week or so, 100 hardy hibiscus "Plum Crazy" out in front of the house. We ripped up the old privet hedges and we're planting the hedge of hardy hibiscus. Now I won't have to get out there with the hedge trimmers in the spring when we're too busy.

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?

Although the ground was super hard to dig into, like rock, I finally got a hole dug for my new "Magicberry" Holly shrub, which is just a fancy name for a male "Blue Prince" and female "Blue Princess" Holly shrub stuck in the same pot.

I intend on teasing the two shrubs apart next Spring, but will enjoy them together in the ground this Fall and Winter by our back door...

It's kinda late but I just finished transplanting my "Patio" tomato plant into a much bigger pot to prepare it for it's indoor Fall and Winter fruit production, in my south windows. :D

Wish it wasn't nighttime or I'd show a shot...

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?

Not sure if I mentioned in April I spent two weeks planting about 50 trees on my new property in southern Costa Rica. Mostly fruit and shade and a few flowering things and bamboo. Google "Santiago Springs Costa Rica" to see the development --2.8 acres for one tenth of what a smaller lot would cost on the coast --only one and a half hrs. away. My dream is coming true!

Emily , just saw this one now the black stemmed bamboo is "Phyllostachys Nigra" Phyllostachys nigra - Black Bamboo - Poaceae, the yellow one with the green stripes is " Robert Young" http://http://www.lewisbamboo.com/ryoung.html

Usually they are propagated by cutting off bits of the rhizome. Did yours end up rooting?

Emily,

Bob is absolutely correct.
;)

After I learned from Bob the name of the black stemmed bamboo, Phyllostachys Nigra, I found the following information for you from
Propagating Phyllostachys nigra - Bamboo Forum - GardenWeb :

Quote:

It's no harder than any other running bamboo. You either need a division from an existing plant that includes a good sized root ball, or you need to start it from a piece of rhizome with viable buds. A division is the most reliable way; you may have anywhere from 0-100% success trying to start from rhizome pieces. You cannot propagate any running bamboo, including Ph. nigra, from branch or culm cuttings.
My neighbor grows Phyllostachys Nigra in her backyard for over 12 years. Those runner bamboos can be very invasive.
:(

I may be mistaken but I think you need part of the root system (rhizome) to propagate bamboo

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?

SoBe Musa, hope you caught the advise given in the posts below....yes, must be started from rhizomal material, yes, very invasive, so contain with barriers of some type, or be prepared for lots of maintenance to keep in bounds.:08:

Congrat's on the "Robert Young" it'll be growing in no time flat. I'd definitely try to get some roots of the Phylostachys Nigra..... and send some to New Jersey for a try:ha:

Emily, if there clumping bamboo they can be rooted with culm cuttings [I'm sure you know that now]. Runners would have required the root cuttings.:2738:

Only 50 dollars for a lady palm of that size is an AWESOME deal!!! Great find. I never saw one in my Home Depot, but I guess I'll have to keep on looking since they are one of my favorite palms, but way too expensive at the normal price!

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?

I had been trying to buy Sour Orange seedlings but had been unable to find any. Sour Orange is a superior citrus root-stock. They may be susceptible to a specific root disease but this is not a problem in a non-commercial environment where the roots of different citrus trees do not interlock. I had to resort to paying a relatively high price for a single fruit. The juice was very sour but good. I just planted the seeds today, and hopefully will have some seedlings soon. When or if they pop, I'll provide some pictures. :jalapenonaner:

I've been thinking about applying for a permit from the BATF&Ex to produce mango and Banana liquor. I just need to get fruit production up to those levels first.
