Only 80F?!?! That's like super hot for this time of year for us!! It's like in the 50's and I actually like it!! 80F would be pretty nice! "I would kill for that weather, but something simple like a carrot, but not spiders there icky!" (Patrick Star) But then again I wouldn't be warming myself by the fire cooking hot dogs. :ha:

Richard: I realize SD's crowded but they'd better make room for one more !

A friend of mine found a stray Zantedeschia Aethiopica (Cala lily - why all the long names!?), hiding under some herbs in his garden, and let me have it! He said it's poisonous but grows to be a really huge plant! Cool!

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?

Planted around 40 seedlings of Barbados Pride of mixed colours - yellow, dusky pink and red/orange - in front of the front yard wall. The gardeners were concerned that they might be flame trees - Delonix - which are very common here and look similar - and that the spacing was too close. As if!!! but nice of them to notice and think about it.

Make sure they get a little chill while they are dormant.

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?

Just received a package from Welker's Grove Nursery. Planted 10 Sequoiadendron giganteum (Giant Sequoia), 3 Metasequoia glyptostroboides (Dawn Redwood) and 1 Sequoia sempervirens (Coast Redwood). I plan on clearing some land and seeing how big these giants can get before the worms make me fertilizer. :woohoonaner:

Giant Sequoia seedling:

Dawn Redwood seedling, thought to be extinct for millions of years until being rediscovered in China in the 40's: a deciduous conifer:

Coast Redwood, Tallest tree in the world as of 2006, named "Hyperion" and found in California, an amazing 379.1 feet tall. Not even close yet:

Also re-potted a Raja puri and Double mahoi, lost in pic somewhere:

Need to cut in a cupola for my mystery musa to unroll it's leaves properly. Of course, it's only after I win the the lottery:

Definitely need to invest in a quality greenhouse sometime soon. Thanks for looking!

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?

Hey Steve, way to go. If you give those conifers a modest feeding 3 times a year with some extra Iron and Calcium (if deficient in your soil), they get big quickly after the first 3-5 years.

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?

I have a 3 1/2 yr old ice cream that sorta stopped growing (in a pot at south window & a grow lite) so yesterday I cut a 7ft & a 4ft pup off of 8ft (pstems) mama to give mama more energy. I left a 2 ft pup on. I'm still hoping for a flower by next summer.
Mama is in 65gal smart pot & the pups are now in their own 23 gal pots. It sure looks tropical in the living room!

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?

I ordered a 5gal needle palm with some of my christmas money. Still waiting on it to come in the mail, it will be next week. I already have a spot in my greenhouse and a pot ready for it. I also have 5 neddle palm seedlings but after I heard how slow they grow I decided to buy one larger plant. I have a spot on the SE side of my house picked out for it already so it gets part sun and it will be protected from most wind there.

Caloosamusa 12-30-2009 08:25 PM

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?

Needle Palms are the world's most cold hardy palm Native to Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and a very useful "survival" plant. :2239:

I planted tomatoes and eggplants--tomatoes include Arkansas Travler, Black Plum, Better Boy, and Belgium giant--eggplants were a mix of white, purple and green varieties. A little too early for peppers.

Well, it is a Guzmania which are in the Bromeliaceae family. Here's a bit more info: Guzmania - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, and a plethora of info: BSI - Bromeliad Info - Genera Etymology

Love the Bromeliads, and would love to have an entire conservatory devoted to them and similar rainforest plants one day. Lottery? Otherwise, replanted a kaffir lily yesterday as well as a couple "rescue" African violets and a kalanchoe that needed a home.

In response to Taylor's comments: I believe you are confusing the term "stole" with long term borrowing arrangement, where-in they can have it back, should it not work out, and plant rescue, where-in one is compelled, and indeed required to save a plant from future eradication and/or neglect.Only conditional on leaving more than you took, IMHO!

Re: What did you plant today (other plants)?

I got two new plants yesterday

Canna warscewiczii
It has purple streaked, shining foliage, blackish stems & cherry red tubular blooms. This (non-hybrid) species from Costa Rica & Brazil flowers from Spring to frost & maintains a neat look as the flowers fall naturally from the spikes. Grow in rich soil & does well in a container. To 6’ tall and 3’ across. Attracts hummers.

Gladiolus alatus
This is a South African bulb . The 6-8” flower spikes hold large orange and green marked flowers. Very similar to Gladiolus equitans but has more slender foliage. The flowers are fragrant. Spring blooming. Grows in sandy soil so would probably be best grown in a pot with some extra sand added to the soil. Should be allowed to go dry in summer during dormant period..
Here is the Gladiolus alatus
