Nice. I got a small Dutchman's pipe a few months back for the purpose of attracting the pipevine swallowtail butterflies. No where near flowering yet.

Huernia Zebrina (heard it called a "donut catus"). The flower is pretty small, not quite 1.5 inches across the points.

I have a banana passion fruit that I started from seed, but can't seem to get the plant to strengthen up... do you find that they are weaker than other varieties?

The banana passion vine is very aggressive.Passiflora Tacsonia do not like high temps. They grow best in cooler zones San Francisco has ideal conditions for them.

Try shading it.

I have heard that it is a bad invasive in Hawaii and I hadn't seen it in FL... now I know why. I've actually had it growing in a pot in the shade. I thought maybe the shade was part of the reason why the plant was so weak. Most of the stems would break off just by moving them a little. Usually in Florida most full sun plants will do OK in some shade since the summer heat and humidity is like a pressure cooker. I've only seen a few types of Passiflora in FL and it seems like the vines are short lived.

From what I have heard not many people have success with Tacsonia in FL.The fruit to me isn't any good. All P.edulis and P.incarnata varieties will grow great in your climate.

As usual I was trying to grow the exotic, hard to find variety. I don't see passiflora included in very many FL gardens even though it is sold at many of the garden centers. The red one is probably the most common one I see being sold, but I have heard that one doesn't do that well in FL.

This one ? Passiflora vitifolia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia will grow okay in FL. but blooms better in winter there. The fruit on that one isn't worth eating .

Re: What is blooming in your garden today (other plants)?

Yes, that's probably it unless there are other red varieties around. I assume that one is "grape leaved" hence vitifolia? Good help to ID it out of bloom. I see it sold everywhere, but I never see it anyone's garden. I had heard that it is grown as an annual around here... maybe because of nematodes? I don't know why for sure. I wanted to grow a variety for the fruit mostly... I'm having issues with rabbits eating the leaves anyhow... might not be meant to be.

Look for P.edulis Frederick. Good size and great tasting fruit self pollinating. If you have trouble with animals or nematodes plant in 15gal. or larger pot.

Re: What is blooming in your garden today (other plants)?

That might be the one I had on my list to try to find... sounds familiar. I kind of gave up on my passiflora quest b/c they don't seem to label the cultivars around here. I was going to get it online at one point, but opted for seeds of other varieties. Do you find that nematodes are a big issue for passiflora? I had never had to deal with them as a major pest until moving to FL. It will be a while before I can build up the soil enough to hopefully improve the issue. Any veg plants in the ground... forget it! Roots so knotted it's unreal. Is Frederick true from seed?
