Mike - wish I could help - my one satsuma tree tastes pretty good - took a few years to get to that point - but I don't know the variety.
The absolute best satsuma ever tasted came from a tree at the LSU orchard - named #5.

From what I've been reading that's the best, but Armstrong is close but ripen's much earlier.. Some of the varieties of Oranges they have down there @ the grower's are plenty to be had... Of course there is @ least two other growers in the area.. :^)

For a named variety the Owari was the best that I have ever tasted that was from my little tree two years ago. The fruit were tiny, but really quite good. I left them on the tree for long period of time prior to harvesting. No fruit on it last year. This yr removed some shade and it is full of blossoms again. I have never got anything off my Kimborough which last year was almost overtaken with the rootstock crowding out the graft. I protected my three citrus trees this year from the cold and they suffered little if any damage. Same for my ice cream banana plant that now has it first leaf fully out there and I am waiting for more leaves now.

I saw some Owari @ one of the nurseries locally..

Never heard of no Pineapple Naval, or Amber Sweet.. Sounds like Marketing to a Sweet tooth, or along those means.. :^)

The owari took the cold last winter like a champ. It got down to 15-17 degrees and it did not lose its established leaves. Its pushing new growth and flowering now.

Man that is pretty dog-gone good I'd say.. How long have you grown it? Or how old is that Satsuma tree? :^)

It is on the property am I renting. The tree itself is maybe 6 feet tall at this point and it was not taken care very well. It couldn't have been planted more than 3/4 years ago.

I have an Armstrong that's may or may not come back this year but it was delicious last year, fruited the first year I got it from Home Depot. Darkman has a Freemont Tangerine that's really tasty. Hope this helps.

Hey Bo - I concur with the great taste of the Freemont - but I think it bit the dust this winter. My Freemont currently has only one tiny green sprout.

I have an unknown satsuma -planted years ago-now has 4+" trunk- it breezed through last winter freezes-no leaf loss.
I think Darkman has an Oarwi? that did very well last winter.
He also had another tasty variety that did very well- Darkman?? can you provide info

TJ....Hate to hear about Darkman's Freemont tangerine. I'm thinking about trying the "Owari" if my Armstrong doesn't make it.

Bo - Man, I hate that about the Freemonts - those were great tangerines - I also had a Freemont in ground and planning on budding one for you but not now. mine will be lucky to survive - just one tiny sprout is showing.
I hear Owari was a survivor from last winter's blast - don't think I have ever tasted one.
Darkman has another suma variety XenShi? He says it shrugged off the cold with minor damage and is a good tasting suma...
Charles? any satsuma recommendations?

The meyer lemon also made it through last winter, very few tips of branches were burnt. It lost almost all of its leaves but it has grown them all back now and is flowering.

I like hearing Citrus success stories. I don't think my Improved Meyer's could do that well in the ground. Of course she really didn't regress indoors like I thought she may, and now has a good 3 dozen buds on her..
My Hamlin's got toasted, and fixing to plant my Owari.. :^)

Make sure you keep it protected the first couple of winters, these trees were more than a couple years old which has a lot to do with their success. Both of these trees also were covered in ice because of the ice storm which provided insulation from the cold. I don't think the Meyer lemon would have made it if not for that.

I think the only thing I may do this year is up-pot her to a 25 Gallon pot before any fruit develops.
I think if my other Hamlin dies I will replace it with an Armstrong Satsuma.. :^)
